Olyn Membian enjoys her work as a public servant

“Family niya, family friend namin. Actually dati niloloko loko pa ng daddy niya yung dad ko o ano balae daw tawag ng daddy niya tapos yun nangyari nga.”

Sarah Geronimo: ’Di po ako ligawin

Will the movie which pairs Sarah Geronimo with Vhong Navarro, Toni Gonzaga and Rayver Cruz push through?

We asked this question mismo kay Sarah when she met with members of the entertainment press, after her 13-city tour in the U.S. with Billy Crawford, Mark Bautista and Charlie Sheen.

And Sarah’s next project for this year, starting on June 12 to September 20, is the re-staging of her highly successful concert at the Araneta Coliseum last November 2008, Sarah Geronimo: The Next One.

This time naman, she will be performing in different parts of the country, like Lipa, Batangas (June 12); San Fernando, Pampanga (June 20); Dagupan City (June 26); Cagayan de Oro (July 3); Bacolod City (July 17); Cebu City (July 31); Tagum City (August 7); Iloilo City (August 21); Tacloban City (August 28); Naga City (September 11); and Davao City (September 20).

Currently, Sarah is promoting her The Next One concert at the Araneta Coliseum, which can now be bought on original quality DVD.

The DVD features some memorable moments ni Sarah, such as her playing the piano; her singing a duet with the Backstreet Boy member, Howie D., and many more.

“As you see, ’di naman araw-araw may concert ako.”

What does she do during her spare time?

“Nagbabasa. Kung hindi man, I play with my computer,” sagot niya.

May pina-planong pelikula for Sarah and Gerald pero wala pang definite kung kelan.

Maria (Angela) at two-time Best Supporting Actor, Spanky Manika (Stanley).

Tayong Dalawa not to end soon

Jake Cuenca whom I said was the least magaling nung nagsisimula pa lamang ang serye has evolved into a very sensitive actor.

People took notice of her acting abilities.

Jake Cuenca says Kim Chiu is his favorite leading lady

With Gerald Anderson’s (JR) life on the line in Tayong Dalawa, the whole country awaits Kim Chiu’s (Audrey) decision whether or not she would agree to Jake Cuenca’s (Dave) proposition about saving her beloved in exchange of her hand in marriage. ABS-CBN.com had a chat with Jake last night and he excitedly gave a few hints on what people should watch out for in this top-rating teleserye especially when it comes to his role. “You will definitely see more of the bad side of Dave. Kasi ngayon parang he’s a selfish person. Kahit maganda ang intensyon niya laging may mali with his actions eh.

Is it possible for Kim’s character to fall in love again with Jake in the story? “I don’t know about Audrey pero Dave will do anything for that to happen kasi nga yung love niya para kay Audrey higit pa sa sarili niya or sa pamilya niya. Abangan na lang ng mga tao kung paano susuyuin ni Dave si Audrey at the same time yung mga conflicts niya with JR. Siyempre yung rift namin magkapatid will always be there. But what Jake loves most about the whole thing is that he still gets to play the good guy in certain situations. “Yes, he's not a tailor-fit bida or kontrabida. He crosses the line between the two eh. That’s the challenge with Dave. Like right now, yung ineere nila, may reason kung bakit hinihingi ko yung buhay ni Audrey kapalit ng buhay ni JR. There's a good and bad side to it,” he explained.

No doubt about it, the team behind Tayong Dalawa will continue to make the plot juicier than ever as the show goes on. Is there more pressure for him and Gerald since the story mostly revolves around their relationship as estranged brothers? “There's always pressure from the beginning. I think the key to the success of the show is our teamwork. Tulad nga ng title ng show, when you say Tayong Dalawa it’s not just one eh. It really takes to tango, it takes two to make a scene so we really practice that. We’ve gotten this far nila Kim and Gerald because of teamwork. Kaya nga I am very thankful to the two of them dahil tinanggap nila ako. It’s not easy to get in between the country's most popular love team but they really helped me through it,” he stressed.

This led him to point out he is most comfortable to work with Kim compared with other female stars today. “Kapag ka-eksena ko si Kim I can't ask for more. To be very honest, my favorite leading lady has to be Kim kasi she's very supportive with the scenes and she's very nice to be around with even off cam.” But before the rumor mill misinterprets his statement yet again, Jake was quick to say the reason behind his closeness towards the young actress. “I really look at her as a sister to me in the same way I look at Gerald as a brother. I’m just very thankful to both of them that they let me in with what they have. Talagang nakatulong sa amin tatlo.” When told that they really bring out the best in each other, Jake agreed that they always help each other out. “Talagang we challenge each other. Kapag merong isa sa aming nadapa, merong dalawang tutulong kaagad. Yun ang maganda sa amin.”

Robi Domingo sex video?

Nilinaw namin ito kay Sarah at kinumpirma niyang after You Changed My Life, hesitant siyang gumawa ulit ng pelikula this year.

KC Concepcion worried about Richard

GUESS who got alarmed when she heard that Richard Gutierrez figured in a car accident? KC Concepcion, that's who. She was in Las Vegas when informed about it by her manager, Shirley Kuan. She got so worried especially when she learned that his P.A. Nomar Pardo perished in the accident. Nomar was with them in Club Paradise in Palawan where they shot part of “When I Met U” for more than a week. It was only after she finally got the chance to speak with Richard and he himself assured her that he's really okay that she felt more at peace. When she and her mom Sharon Cuneta did their concert in Las Vegas at the Paris Hotel, she informed the fans of their love team who were there that Richard is recovering well in the hospital.

Last night, the Gutierrez family offered a thanksgiving mass at 6 p.m. at the Christ the King Church in Green Meadows, inviting all their friends and fans of Richard to attend the mass. His brother Raymond returned yesterday morning from his trip to Europe so he was able to attend the affair.

John Lloyd Cruz intimidated by Governor Vilma Santos?

John Lloyd Cruz just got back from his recent trip to New York where he and the rest of the cast of Star Cinema’s In My Life (A Mother’s Story) shot most of the crucial scenes for this movie. Kasama sa pelikulang ito si Luis Manzano at siyempre si Governor Vilma Santos, it’s her comeback vehicle after five years of not making movies.

We also asked John Lloyd, who is also known as one of the country’s sensitive actors of, how is it to work first time with Vilma Santos, the legendary actress? Aminado si Lloydie, naroon ang hiya, ang ilang pero he has to get over it daw agad. “Gaya na lang din nu’ng first time kong maka-trabaho sina Sir Boyet (Boyet de Leon) at Aga Muhlach, ewan ko, pero ang surreal ng moment. Alam mo ‘yun, ‘pag ka-eksena mo sila. Despite that unbelievable moment for John Lloyd to have finally worked with Ate Vi, the actor told ABS-CBN.com, he has to get over that feeling of being ilang and just get back to reality. He has to face the fact that he is now working with the one of the country’s most respected actresses.

Hindi pa man ipinapalabas ang pelikulang ito, people seem to make a big fuss out of the kissing scene that Luis and John Lloyd shot in New York for this film. It was a very tender moment of me and Luis.”

Naikuwento rin ng aktor sa ABS-CBN.Com ang tungkol sa ilang preparations na kinailangan iyang gawin for his character. First time na gumanap na gay si Lloydie sa isang film pero buo ang tiwala niya sa kanyang direktor na si Olive Lamasan and he underwent a two-day work shop training under the supervision of Direk Laurice Guillen and Direk Olive na rin. Dagdag pa ni John Lloyd, they also did immersions in New York and basically characterization ang nangayari. Kailangan umano niyang makabuo ng isang character sa pagkatao ni Noel (his role in the movie).
“Basta, maganda ang naging take -off namin sa New York at talagang ‘yung sa amin kasi ni Luis, medyo mahirap ‘yun, eh. Ang daming mga nuances na kailangan i-establish. Hindi lang ‘yung kailangan i-establish, kailangan ‘yung from within talaga.”

More sex videos from Hayden Kho?

“This is not tsismis, this is from someone who is in authority.

Pero ayon nga kay Kris Aquino, walang outright na denial ang lawyer ni Katrina about the drug issue kaya it’s up to us to read between the lines.

Vicki Belo, no comment on sex video scandal

“I`ve got nothing to hide, I`ve done nothing wrong,” ang makahulugang mga katagang binitiwan ni Dra. Vicki.

ABS-CBN lauded for corporate governance

The Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) recently honored ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. and Subsidiaries as one of the top-performing companies of 2008 based on the Fourth Corporate Governance (CG) Scorecard Project.

The annual event promotes transparency, accountability and the general practice of good corporate governance in all publicly-listed companies in the country.

With a grade of 93 percent, ABS-CBN proved once again that it is one of the country’s best-managed companies. It is also the only multimedia company in the Top 15 of the scorecard rankings.

A total of 138 corporations from different sectors were graded based on the rights of shareholders, equitable treatment of shareholders, role of stakeholders, disclosure and transparency and board responsibilities in the company.

ICD conducted the CG Scorecard with the help of the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Philippine Stock Exchange and the Ateneo School of Law.

ICD chairman Dr. Jesus Estanislao praised this year’s topnotchers for recognizing the importance of good governance in attracting investment and increasing their market value.

Estanislao said the importance of putting the interests of the shareholders in the heart of every decision made by the company’s board of directors, as done by the world’s globally-competitive corporations.

The ABS-CBN Corporate Board, tasked to make the biggest decisions for the country’s largest multimedia conglomerate, is headed by ABS-CBN chairman and CEO Eugenio Lopez III. ABS-CBN president Charo Santos-Concio sits as one of the 10 board members.

Erich Gonzales hasn't been 'touched'

Karamihan, fellow young actors niya.

But Erich wouldn’t want to name names. “Baka, itanggi nila, ’di kawawa naman ako,” inosenteng katuwiran niya.

This is why, aniya, when in one of her scenes in her maituturing na first title role sa tv series Katorse on ABS CBN, she had to submit to a kissing scene with Ejay Falcon, she had to ask their director, Malu Sevilla, how she expects her to do it.

E, nagkataon din daw na iyon din ang first kissing scene ni Ejay on the small screen. Hayan tuloy, for that particular eksena, kinailangan nilang i-workshop ni Gina Alajar.

So, how did it finally come out? The kissing scene, tanong namin kay Erich.

“Well, para sa akin, super,” sagot niya, giggling. “Sana, ganundin ang maging reaction ng manonood.

“Sobra parehong nerbiyos namin habang kinukunan ang eksena.”

* * *

A TV remake of a movie, produced by Regal Films and which served as Dina Bonnevie’s launching vehicle, aware si Erich na somehow ikukumpara ang kanyang acting kay Dina, who is now considered one of our truly best actresses.

“Pati na rin ni Ejay at ni Xian (Lim, who is introduced in the series).

“Pero, sabi naman sa amin ni Direk Malu, we should not copy the acting nina Ms. D, pati na rin ng kanyang dalawang kapareha sa movie.

“Puwede daw naming i-interpret ang aming roles the way we want it.

“Which is what we did.”

Dina’s leading men in the original Katorse were Gabby Concepcion and the late Alfie Anido.

Rico Blanco scores another hit

Rico Blanco has just released the third hit single off his critically-acclaimed solo debut disc Your Universe under Warner Music Phils.

The infectious, modern pop/rock track Antukin literally has “class” written all over it, yet highlights Blanco’s traditionally uncanny knack to tug at the heartstrings of Pinoys and their sentiments.

Antukin is enjoying the top spot on nationwide radio and on MYX.

The video for Rico’s third single directed by Treb Monteras also enjoys heavy airplay on music channels and receives massive views on-line. Conceptualized yet showing a looser side of Blanco, the video can be viewed through www.ricoblanco.com.ph and on youtube.com.

Warner Music Philippines is now preparing the Southeast Asian release of Your Universe, which features new songs.

Your Universe is available in record stores nationwide.

Kris Lawrence: Is Kris riding on Katrina-Hayden issue?

The answer to today’s interrogative headline is: No, Kris Lawrence is not riding on the controversy involving his ex-girlfriend Katrina Halili and Dr. Hayden Kho.

It’s pure coincidence that Kris is promoting Careless Whisper, a spin-off from his latest album Moments of Love (released by MCA Music and ALV Music), now that the Hayden-Katrina video is the talk of the town. You see, one video shows Hayden and Katrina rehearsing a sexy dance number to the tune of, that’s it, Careless Whisper — you know, I’ll never gonna dance again, guilty feet have got no rhythm.

Katrina decided to end her brief romance with Kris as part of her “moving on” after she recovered from the initial impact of the issue that broke out late last year when Hayden denied the existence of the sex videos now circulating, yes, worldwide.

Kris’s album contains 11 tracks, mostly covers.

According to MCA Music sources, the promo for Careless Whisper was planned long before the current video scandal exploded.

Nakakasawa na si Kris Aquino?

WHAT can Kris Aquino do to reinvent herself?

Because she has been given nothing but game and talk shows, her mother network, ABS-CBN is making her acting career stagnant.

Plus there is an issue that her supposed movie with Willie Revillame has temporarily been put on hold because the Erap-Ai Ai movie would be prioritized by Star Cinema.

Many are complaining that almost all she does are game shows.

Some of her fans are not that excited anymore to see her on television doing the same routine.

Kris has proven many times that she has exceptional talent not only in hosting but also in acting. But with the recent events, seems like the route her acting career is taking is blurred.

Any new acting vehicle for Kris?

Jericho Rosales at John Estrada -- All is well

All is well now between Jericho Rosales at John Estrada, who almost exchange blows sa isang event na ginanap sa noo’y bago pa lamang kabubukas na Mall of Asia.

Ito’y tiniyak ng dalawa sa pictorial ng bagong series na pagsasamahan nila on ABS-CBN, ang Dahil May Isang Ikaw along with Lorna Tolentino, Gabby Concepcion and Kristine Hermosa.

The two, if you recall, had a falling out when Heart Evangelista allegedly told Jericho that John was trying to make a pass at her, when one time they accidentally bumped into each other sa isang bar.

What a supposedly well-bred lady like Heart was doing in a bar minus her boyfriend na si Jericho nga noon was not explained.

In any case, ang sumbong na iyon ni Heart, Jericho, who was at that time in love na in love kay Heart (’di kaya hanggang ngayon?), obviously took to heart.

Well, according to witnesses, kung hindi sa maagap na pag-referee ni Gary Valenciano, who happened to be around (Jericho’s being managed by Gary’s wife Angeli), baka naunahan pa nina Jericho at John ang hanggang ngayo’y pinag-uusapang bout nina Manny Pacquiao at Ricky Hatton.

A great role for Jericho Rosales

It’s nice to know that a lot of people like Jericho Rosales still believe poverty is never an obstacle in maximizing one’s potential. Rather, it is a challenge that can be overcome with hard work, determination and faith in God.

2009 marks Jericho’s 12th year in show business.

Beyond their ability to entertain, artists can use their fame and influence to affect and inspire positive change. His career spans over a decade, encompassing the lowest of the lows and the highest of the highs. He was a fish vendor, busboy, dishwasher and pizza joint crew before showbiz beckoned.

“There is hope. There will always be hope. Hope is actually in the air we breathe every day. We just need to see and accept it to make our dreams come true,” says Jericho.

Born Jericho Vibar Rosales on Sept. 22, 1979 in Quezon City, Echo went to New Era High School and was discovered on Eat, Bulaga!’s Mr. Pogi competition. He gradually rose to mainstream popularity as homegrown talent of ABS-CBN. Jericho rapidly established a respectable reputation with a string of blockbuster movies and top-rating soap operas. Jericho also honed his hosting skills on TV via A.S.A.P.

Recently, Jericho reunited with music, one of his first loves, by developing his prowess as a singer, musician and songwriter.

Today, Jericho remains on the top of his game with Manila Genesis Entertainment and Management, Inc. as his new management company. He has an exciting line-up of projects which includes an upcoming soap on ABS-CBN, a full-length film with Star Cinema, and his debut, full-length solo album under Star Records.

His achievements and increasing body of work, however, are not by-products of some serendipitous event in his life.

Everything Jericho has is a result of many years of hard-work, determination, and faith in God.

Like a lot of young people of his generation, he believes in his dreams. As a fish vendor in Marikina’s Concepcion Market, Jericho realized he is good in selling stuff.

“I did very well when I sold fish. I realized that I have the skill and the ability to sell things. In my struggles to be an artist, it has always been an aspiration of mine to sell the idea of how hard work, determination, faith in oneself, and most especially faith in God can change one’s life,” explains Jericho.

Poverty may be a powerful opponent that could hinder Jericho from reaching his dreams but he proved otherwise.

“Success is very subjective. Success for one person could mean the opposite to another. For me success is always the result of hard work. If I could inspire just one person to dream and do the right thing, then I will consider myself successful. Aside from using my craft to inspire other people, my dream is to provide a good life for my family. I am at my happiest every time I see my family happy,” says Jericho.

At the center of everything is Jericho’s faith in God. Although he admits that the road to success is filled with extreme hardship, Jericho believes his constant efforts to strengthen his faith made him surpass challenges.

Today, as he celebrates his 12th anniversary in showbiz, Jericho’s prayer is to continuously be an inspiration to others.

“I am content and thankful with what I have right now. In the future I would like to explore other things such as directing, producing films, and writing more songs. But in totality, I just want everything to be consistent with my goals and dreams,” he says.

How can a simple fish vendor reach the peak of success and maintain a humble outlook? The answer is simple: One must always believe in dreams and hope that every ingredient that leads towards success is achieved through God’s help.

Jericho is a beacon of hope who reminds us that poverty can be overcome by hard work.

Narito, more or less, ang ilang questions and answers sa presscon:

Question: What convinced you to perform here?

Cook: Practically they asked. I mean, I just wanna play anywhere and everywhere, so, when the question was brought up, it was an easy yes.

Q: Were you surprised with your popularity in the Philippines?

Archuleta: I knew there were fans here I just didn’t realize how many fans…

C: I remember I got restless at the hotel, because it’s been like get up to dress, go back to bed, eat stuff, like that.

“Yesterday I got to do something, went to the mall across the street and you know, two stores in, there’s like a mob of like a 100 or 200 people just kind of following us around the mall, and that doesn’t happen at home at all, so, it was unnerving but very humbling. “I don’t know, I think to come this far from home and see this amount of support, you know, not just for me, not for us, but for the show, that’s a huge thing.

“I think that’s what American Idol is really all about. It’s finding people who otherwise wouldn’t have been found and giving them this platform to go around the world to do something they love to do.

Q: Kris Allen vs Adam Lambert (top two finalists of ongoing Americal Idol Season 8), who do you think will win?

C: Following a little bit, it’s been tough for both of us being on the road. For me, I have this theory that the same person wins every year, not Simon Cowell (one of the judges of Americal Idol).

“Past that, I really think between everybody that’s left, I think it’s anybody’s game. I don’t know, I think there was no clear cut between the two of us last year either, so…

A: I haven’t really been able to keep up with, you know, all the shows. So, I haven’t gotten to see all the performances the day that Adam and Kris both did.

“But I did get to see last night’s show and I think they both did just like great. I’m just like really impressed. They both have skills and different ways of music and I’m really interested in seeing where both of them will go and the way they’ll do their own projects because they’re both just really talented guys.

Q: What is your impression of the Philippines before you came here and when you arrived. Have you tasted any Filipino dish and did you like any?

C: I had two people that kind of gave me a little bit of info about the Philippines before I got here. (One was) An old HS (high school) friend of mine who travels here and studies abroad.

“Basically, the things that they told me revolved around just how beautiful this country is and how nice the people are. You’re very nice. I mean, to actually travel out here and have the reception that we got, that just affirms a lot of things that my friends have been saying.

“I don’t know, but I’ve never...personally ever received as warm a welcome as I did when I walked off the airplane after 24 hours of travel and I looked terrible, and people are just losing it.

“It was very cool and from what I’ve seen in the country, so far, it’s amazing. Very beautiful.

A: He’s so much better at talking than I am. It’s kind of the same thing. You don’t really know what to expect. With the amount of people (that) recognize you, and also just the way the culture is and what it’s gonna be like and stuff. So, I really didn’t have much of a very good idea of what it was gonna be like coming here.

“But being here, I’m pleasantly surprised with just everything, the way things have been going, and we’ve only been here a couple of days, its already been just an amazing experience.

C: Apparently, I keep telling them they’re nice people, they clap. So, that’s cool.

C: Yes. I’ll try it. I tried out for a TV show, so, I’ve got the ambition.

Q: What’s the most difficult part of being famous?

A: That depends on what your mood is kinda like. What you’re able to handle at the time. One thing that’s really difficult is being away from home, being away to your family.

“I love traveling and stuff, that’s always a lot of fun. But just being able to hang out with like your brothers and sisters, your friends is always fun, so, you know, I feel kinda bad sometimes.

“I’m kind of missing out on their little faces, typical teenage faces that kids go through. It’s fun keeping in touch with them because I don’t think I would have appreciated them as much if I didn’t leave.

“So, now that I’ve left, I’ve gained a much greater appreciation of my family and my brothers and sisters even though sometimes they can get on your nerves.

C: The hardest part of being famous, for me, is hanging out with him (referring to Archuleta). I was kidding, I was kidding.

“Actually, I’ll second what he said. I’m very close to my family and especially in the last year, I’ve missed on a lot of big things. Like I have a new nephew, I missed the first steps and all that stuff.

“I think right now, I think I can speak for Archie (pet name ni Archuleta) when I say this, we’ve both been given an amazing level of support by our families that allows us to do stuff like this. To be able to chase this stuff now while we’re young and have the opportunity.

Martin Nievera's letter to Ricky Lo

Dear Ricky,

I have been waiting to speak to you to share a very heart-warming behind-the-scene story that happened backstage during the Pacquiao-Hatton fight right before I entered the ring to sing the “now” very much-talked-about Philippine National Anthem. This story may not mean anything to anyone but I want to share it with you anyway.

It’s funny but this is the first time in all the years I have known you that I am writing you feeling nervous and insecure. I have never been one to look before I leap, but with all the names and words that have been thrown at me, above me, through me and below me, I come to you now wounded, hurt, confused but inspired.

It happened during the second to the last round of the last fight before the big, very publicized “main event” between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton. I was so nervous I could actually hear my heartbeat as I paced back and forth like an expectant father alongside Tom Jones. I was going over the lyrics of Lupang Hinirang for the one millionth time. It was right about the time we were all being called to stay together to form the first half of the usual boxers parade and their teams, when my son Robin tapped me on the shoulder with what I thought at the time was extremely bad news.

“Hey Dad, remember the minus one CD we used during the sound check earlier today? Well, I left it in the car.”

I nearly had a heart attack. If you have ever been to any Pacquiao fight or any event of this size, you know the car was not right outside the backstage. No, no, no. The car was parked just a little closer than Earth is to Mars!

So before I could be arrested for killing my first-born, I calmly, in almost a crying kind of a voice, asked Robin, “What? Am I not a good father? Do you really want to kill me now? Or, if you do, puede after the fight?”

I mean, with all that was going on way before this recent controversy, with the rumors about being a jinx because I was the first male anthem singer and so many people telling me to NOT forget the lyrics, and so on and so forth... I was a wreck!

Okay, pause. Let’s go back to a month before the fight...

Weeks before flying to Las Vegas, I think I asked at least 10 people about how I should or should not sing the anthem. If I remembered correctly I asked Louie Ocampo, my back-up singers and vocal coaches. Then there was Karylle, Christian Bautista, Regine Velasquez, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Kuh Ledesma and even Pops. Oh, and lastly, Ryan “Mr. C” Cayabyab did “advise” me against changing notes and melodies. All of the above did.

But Mr. C “advised” me; he did not “warn” me. There is a big difference. In fact, he was the first one I received a text from right after I sang that night and it read, “Awesome!” I am forever grateful to you, Mr. C!

Anyway, right before I left I took the advice of all the above mentioned and had another minus one arranged that was more traditional and safe even though I knew no matter how I sang it I was gonna get criticized. So I decided to put my original “version 1 minus one” on hold and made “version 2” to try and avoid even more criticism than I already knew I was gonna get.

Okay, back to real time...

You can probably feel my frustration and pain right about now, but I tried to keep calm and not de-focus from the enormous task ahead.

Just as I was already telling myself to sing it a cappella, my son Robin leaned over to me and told me a mouthful I will never forget for as long as I live.

“Don’t worry, Dad. I have already put in the ‘version 1 minus one’ in the sound booth. Come on Dad, this is the version you dreamed of doing and now we are finally here. I know how hard you worked on this song and you got it! I know you want to do this version and not the one we did during sound check so I purposely left that CD in the car. So you can finish what you started. Never mind what others may say, Dad. You get that all the time. Don’t compromise a goal that you yourself set. If you compromise, what will that mean for the next singer? Get up there, Dad, and do it!”

My eyes, already watery, finally gave way. Everything went silent...no screams, no music, nothing. After my son pushed me up into that ring with his wisdom, I thought either I was dead or going deaf. Then I realized that I had plugged in my monitors into both ears and I wanted to laugh. I realized at that moment that my son was absolutely right.

With all my heart and my love for the Philippines mixed together with my wanting Manny to win just like anybody else, I felt a surge of energy that literally lifted my feet off the ground. It was as if the Holy Spirit ran through my veins right at that moment and, with as much humility mixed with an over abundance of honor, I knew I had to make this the proudest moment for every Filipino.

That night I was not a concert king. That night, I was the proudest Filipino alive. That night, I was a hero in my son’s eyes and that to me was all I needed to get over the fear and finish what I started.

I think we all learned loads from all this and I know that the next anthem singer will be more informed the next time around than I ever was or those who sang before me. My hope and prayer is that he or she be free to sing the anthem without laws and limitations, but with pride and passion and respect for country and the history that defines it.

For me, History should be remembered, taught and learned, but never repeated. Unless, of course. You are Manny Pacquiao.

Thanks, my friend.

Sandara Park on Lollipop

Sandara Park on Lollipop Music video.

Sandara Park is getting a big break in South Korea where she will be formally launched this month as part of the new Korean pop group 2NE1 (short for 21). The all-female group is slowly but surely becoming popular, with its debut single, Lollipop, already topping music charts.

“Korean fans find Sandara ‘simply adorable’,” according to Funfare’s Big Apple correspondent Edmund Silvestre (of The Filipino Reporter) who called my attention to Sandara’s rising popularity in her homeland.

Only a few years ago, Sandara enjoyed huge success in the Philippines after placing second to Hero Angeles in the first Star Circle Quest of ABS-CBN. What she lacked in acting talent, she more than made up for in her irresistible charm and cuteness.

The tandem’s overnight success was short-lived, though. Hero had a falling out with ABS-CBN, while Sandara left for Korea purportedly to study acting. She didn’t reckon with the sad reality that in showbiz, absence doesn’t really make the fans’ hearts grow fonder. Soon, Sandara was replaced by another chinita, Kim Chiu, then a Pinoy Big Brother Teen winner and now a superstar.

Sandara later came back, only to find herself without any project. She decided to return to Korea for good and was taken by YG Entertainment, a topnotch Korean talent management specializing in hip-hop and R&B music. She initially appeared in music videos and commercials and slowly got noticed by the public.

2NE1 is reportedly being built up as the female version of the popular all-male Korean band Big Bang which performed the song Lollipop with Sandara’s group. The glossy music video (available on YouTube) is a visual delight with first-rate production, and young Koreans love it. Aside from Sandara, 2NE1 is also composed of Park Bom, Lee Chaerin and Gong Minji.

But, added Edmund (who provided Funfare the latest info about Sandara), “The sad part is the bad press Sandara is getting lately after the Korean media and bloggers have dug what they claimed was ‘embarrassing’ past photos of the star once known as the Pambansang Krung-Krung ng Pilipinas.” (Krung-krung is Filipino slang for weird or crazy.)

The “embarrassing” photos were those in UNO (Diether Ocampo’s men’s magazine) three years ago, showing Sandara in “sexy” poses. The Korean press describes the photos as “disturbing” and “inappropriate” especially for someone like Sandara who is being packaged as “sweet and innocent.”

BFF movie review

Actually, BFF is an entertaining movie we enjoyed na panoorin from beginning to end.

May kasabihang truth hurts. But in BFF, kahit, wika nga, binalahura siya ni Ai-Ai by exposing her all supposed kapintasan, yup, her katabaan, bilbil and double chin, Sharon didn’t show any resentment at all.

Kung sabagay, gumanti naman siya when she also made pintas sa pinaka-prominent na kapintasan ni Ai- Ai, ano pa nga ba, eh, ’di ang baba nito?

But still, the actress in Sharon surfaced sa kanyang breakdown scene nang malaman niyang mister niya ang tumatawag sa nakatulog na si Ai-Ai.

John Estrada, who plays Sharon’s husband, made a litany ng kanyang regrets sa kausap (na ’di niya alam ay si Sharon), sa pagpapanggap niyang binata siya and his final decision to break off with her (Ai-Ai).

Listening to her husband’s ‘confession’ and her supposed discovery na ang babaing all along ay itinuring niyang threat sa kanyang marriage ay best friend niya pala, Sharon displayed a gamut of emotions.

This earned her an applause from the audience, who obviously forgot that moment na isang comedy movie ang kanilang pinanonood.

Bawat artistang kasama, including those na gumanap bilang anak nina Sharon at John, at si Empress Shuck, who played the dalagitang anak ni Ai-Ai, were given his/her moment sa pelikula.

Gina Pareño, who had a special appearance in the film, proved na wala nga talagang maikli o insignificant role.

Mel del Rosario wrote the story and script.

Congratulations, Mel! And congratulations, Direk Wenn, for another job well done!

Karen Davila: Being a working mom not easy

We see her seven days a week co-anchoring the ABS-CBN newscast TV Patrol World, so cool and composed even when reporting the most earth-shaking news here or abroad.

But how is Karen Davila off camera, specifically as wife to David Jude “DJ” Sta. Ana, former news editor of the same station, and mom to their children David Joshua, seven years old, and Lucas, one-year-and-five-months old?

“I’m just like any wife and mother,” admitted Karen. “Even at work, my mind is with my family.”

In an exclusive interview a few issues ago, Karen talked about her career. This time, as a nod to Mother’s Day, she reveals her parenting style:

How do you divide your time between home and work?

“Being a working mother isn’t easy for anyone. I’m fortunate that I’m able to do what I love to do — being a broadcast journalist — but more so, that the hours are flexible compared to that of other working parents. I really manage my time. My sons are growing up fast so I make it a point to spend a lot of quality time with them and include them in my daily activities. Sometimes, I take them with me during light interviews then we take a break for lunch. At home, I read a lot to David and play with him and Lucas a lot. I’m very malambing; I kiss and hug them like there’s no tomorrow. In the Philippines, we’re fortunate to have a good support group. The yayas and lolas are around to help me watch over my kids.”

When at work, how do you check on your kids?

“I call often and know how their day is going. And we chose to live near ABS-CBN so not much time is lost in traffic. We have chosen schools, play groups, therapies for David that are also close to our home.”

At what stage of growing up does a child need hands-on attention?

“I think at every stage, there’s a different need. When I gave birth to Lucas, most of my time was spent breastfeeding and caring for him with the help of my mom and yaya. David had special needs when he was three years old. At four years old, he was diagnosed with having mild autism and that completely changed my mothering style. I was obsessed in making sure he got the best treatment possible — from therapies to the right diet to biomedicine. Now at seven, he’s in a regular school. We are proud of how he has grown and developed so beautifully. He’s smart, and plays like any other child. But we’re always hands-on with him in a unique way.”

Are you bringing up your kids the way you were brought up?

“Growing up, I was very close to my mother, so I can’t imagine having it any other way. But I want my two boys to become close to DJ because I know there are things that only a father can teach.”

How does DJ’s parenting style differ from yours?

“DJ is very quiet, but he’s very supportive and very there for us and the kids. He gets the boys with just a ‘look’. I have a hard time with that. I become ‘soft’ and kiss them after I get upset. Hahahaha!”

Values that you and DJ instill in your kids.

“They are still very young, but we encourage them to be themselves and for David to express how he feels. But at their age, they are trained to stand and kiss us when we get home no matter what they’re doing and to say sorry when they have hurt someone or done something wrong. David and I pray together, which is really cute because he has the simplest and funniest prayers. He prays for a sunny day and for his classmates to have fun.”

Would you and DJ encourage your kids to pursue the same careers as yours?

“No, not at all. I want to discover what my kids are passionate about. But definitely, I want them to be a positive force in the community and help change the world. I think it would be nice if one of them could be President. Hahaha! Why not, Barack Obama did it. If he could, every other child out there should think that he could, too!”

May asaran at piku-nan. Pero para sa akin, wala ‘yun. And I don’t think naman, Kris intentionally does it,” paliwanag ni Ruffa na idinedepensa pa si Kris.

“Alam mo, ever since nine years old pa lang ako, ganyan na talaga si Kris.”

Korina Sanchez stands by Ted

KORINA Sanchez has bid goodbye to her regular radio show on DZMM and to her TV newscast, "Bandila," last Friday to personally attend to the needs of her wedding to Sen. Mar Roxas that's said to be scheduled either early in July or late in September. "But I'll continue to do 'Rated K' every Sunday," she says. "After 20 years in broadcasting na laging gumigi-sing ako ng maaga, siguro naman it's about time pag-ukulan ko naman ng panahon ang personal life ko."

Her wedding gown will be made by international designer Monique Lhuillier who's based in the U.S. and has designed the gowns of top Hollywood stars. She has obviously ironed things out with Kris Aquino (who reportedly sulked when Korina and Mar announced their official engagement in "Wowowee" instead of "SNN") as Baby James Yap will be the ring bearer when she walks down the aisle.

Korina is also helping the birthday celebration of Sen. Mar on May 13 to be held in Tondo to help launch his "padyak" project for the poor. She hasn't given any other details about her wedding (they're still firming up the full entourage) but her ABS-CBN friends already gave her a despedida de soltera. We read Korina's column in the Philippine Star about Ted Failon and it's very touching. She is a true friend to Ted, who's on leave from their DZMM radio show until June. Korina said she'll be there to keep Ted company for a while when he returns. She'll then continue with her leave to help Sen. Mar in his presidential campaign in 2010.

Luis Manzano, John Lloyd Cruz love scene shot on NY bridge

The “intimate scene” between Luis Manzano and John Lloyd Cruz as lovers in Star Cinema’s In My Life was finally shot last week on the Brooklyn Bridge, with the breathtaking Manhattan skyline as backdrop.

“Feel na feel nila ‘yung eksena,” reported Funfare’s Big Apple correspondent Edmund Silvestre (of The Filipino Reporter), “very realistic, which simply means that Luis and John Lloyd are good actors because, as everybody knows, pareho silang straight.”

The movie, directed by Olive Lamasan and also starring Vilma Santos (Luis’ mom playing his mom), is Luis’ most challenging. But whether or not he will finally join the ranks of John Lloyd, Piolo Pascual, Jericho Rosales, Sam Milby, Richard Gutierrez and Dingdong Dantes as big-screen leading men will be known when the film hits the theaters in September.

In an interview with Edmund, a spirited Luis — looking more handsome with his tanned complexion courtesy of Boracay — admitted that the pressure is building up as the shooting is nearing its completion.

“I admit the pressure to deliver a good performance is there,” he said. “After all, it’s with two award-winning actors, my mom, and John Lloyd who is unbelievably a great young actor. I really give my best in every scene, but if there’s a scene na hindi nagustuhan ni direk (Olive), iko-correct naman niya. We find ways kung saan nagkukulang at inaayos talaga ni direk. But in the end, it’s for other people to say how I fare.”

Asked if he got intimidated by his mom and John Lloyd, particularly during heavy dramatic scenes, Luis said, “Not intimidated; it’s more of ‘Wow, this is it, finally we’re starting!’ As I’ve said before, doing this project is like a double-edged sword for me because I get to work with my mom who is considered by some as the greatest actress of all-time in Philippine cinema, and of course with John Lloyd who is a box-office king and who has several acting citations. More of excited siguro but not naman intimidated.”

A much-sought-after host in local television today (A.S.A.P. ’09, Entertainment Live, Pinoy Big Brother), Luis has also proven his comedic talent in Ang Cute ng Ina Mo (with Ai-Ai de las Alas and Anne Curtis), and some acting breaks in TV features and series like Dyosa, Rounin, Crazy For You, Flash Bomba, Your Song and Maalaala Mo Kaya.

And with In My Life, Luis is on the brink of being recognized as a certified dramatic actor and may even bag his first acting trophy, according to a Star Cinema bigwig, with this gay-themed movie that is also about a mother’s great love, predicted to collect honors in next year’s award derby.

“I really hope so,” the 27-year-old actor remarked. “But we don’t want to think about it. We’re just here to do, hopefully, a great job for Filipino moviegoers, especially the Vilmanians who have waited for so long to see my mom again on the silver screen. We want to give them a real quality picture na kahit sila ipagmamalaki nila.”

Edmund also asked Luis if he is dead serious about his relationship with Angel Locsin. Yes, Luis said that he doesn’t want to rush her to the altar with her career in full-swing.

“Definitely it’s a serious relationship, alangan namang naglalaro lang kami sa edad naming ito,” he stressed. ”We are very, very happy with our relationship, pero ang dami pa naming kailangang gawin individually and as a couple so marriage is still out of the question. I still have so much to do. If I believe personally na ang dami ko pang kailangang gawin, mas marami pang kailangang gawin si Angel. She has a brighter future than me in showbiz and I won’t do anything to derail it.”

Luis added that he always gives Angel his 100 percent support. No wonder when asked how he sees the brewing comparison between Marian Rivera, the new Darna, and Angel, who was the last to play the Mars Ravelo superheroine, Luis has this to say:

“I can’t speak on anyone’s behalf, but you know ibang klase ang na-establish ni Angel bilang Darna. If I’m not mistaken, she posted the highest primetime rating like 52 percent. Those will be very big shoes to fill. But in terms of her being insecure (about the comparison) I doubt it. I’m not downplaying Marian, I know she’ll be a good Darna. I’m just talking about the 52 percent rating. And I’m sure when Angel was offered to play Darna, she was also compared with my mom who also played Darna. Angel had some big shoes to fill at the time. So we’ll just have to wait and see how Marian will fare as Darna.”

Like his mom, Luis says he has so much to be thankful for “a smooth sailing life.”

“But smooth sailing does not necessarily mean there are no waves,” he added

He credits his mom and dad Edu Manzano for giving him a solid foundation built on love and respect.

“Even the separation of my parents was never an issue,” he proudly said. “I am very fortunate that I didn’t experience any problem when they decided to part ways. The reason why I could still smile, laugh and crack jokes even when they separated was because never silang nagkulang sa akin and they both found love respectively.”
