With her exposure in the top-rating series, lahat ay nagkakaisa ng paniniwala na malalampasan niya ang mga gulo na dumarating sa kanyang buhay ngayon, with Santino and Bro to help her, wala itong pasubali.

The other woman naman siya sa bagong episode ng Your Song Presents Gaano Kita Kamahal. In the company of Jodi Sta. Maria and Sid Lucero, bilang co-stars and Erick Salud bilang direktor, Maricar is in good hands.

Sam Milby not ready for Anne Curtis?

AT the presscon for “The Wedding,” Anne Curtis (who stars in the new series with Derek Ramsay and Zanjoe Marudo) was asked what does she think is the right time to get married?

“I think, mahirap sagutin 'yan for a girl like me, kasi, wala po sa kamay namin ‘yun kung kelan o kung sino ang pakakasalan namin," she said. But I think for the ladies, when someone proposes at siya na talaga ang gusto mo na makasama for the rest of your life, alam mo for yourself na that's the time to settle down."

Anne wants the traditional way of getting married as she's very Filipina by heart.

When asked who among her ex-boyfriends she really thought of settling down with, she frankly stated: "It's Sam (Milby)."

Did Sam break up with her because he was not ready to settle down?

After all, malalim ang pinagsamahan nila ni Diet.

We doubt if he was also able to join the group sa kanilang performance sa San Francisco (also in California) the following day.

He reportedly had to undergo a series of tests, na gaya nga ng isinulat ng katotong Vinia Vivar, ay okay naman ang naging resulta.

However, we were told na Kristine was able to perform in both shows.

Did we also hear it right na nag-collapse rin si Kitkat sa loob ng banyo ng hotel na kanilang tinitigilan?

Hers, though, was a mild case lang allegedly due to overfatigue.

Christian Bautista does it right this time

The other year, Christian Bautista missed the line, “buhay ay langit sa piling mo...” when he sang Lupang Hinirang at an event in Las Piñas City.

Last Saturday, he sang it again at the opening of the NCAA at the Araneta Coliseum upon the invitation of Manny Pangilinan and, thank heavens, he didn’t miss a beat.

Said Christian, “I was nervous and hesitant at first but I thought it was about time to face this challenge again. I practiced singing the National Anthem everyday even until the last moment. I told God, ‘This is it. I’ve done my part and now I leave the rest to You.’ I sang it proudly and succeeded. I hope this part of my life will serve as an encouragement to others not to be afraid to face past failures, to be brave to try again until they succeed.”

“Happy ako for her. Happy ako for them. I know the guy also. It’s a blessing. I mean, you know, nakakatuwa ‘pag ganu’n sa church nagkakatuluyan and they start a family. So, I only have prayers for them,” say ni Piolo.

Kasama niya sina Jodi Sta. Maria at Sid Lucero.

A pre-nup for Mar & Korina?

A pre-nuptial agreement is likely to happen between soon to be wed Korina Sanchez and Sen. Mar Roxas. “Established na ako and established na siya when we met. We both have investments, I think a pre-nuptial is okey,” explained Korina. Korina took a leave of absence from her work at ABS-CBN to concentrate on the wedding preparations. She is also talking to several local designers for her wedding gown as well as her gown for the reception. Once the wedding is done, Korina will be step-mom to Mar’s teenage son Paolo. “I will be there whenever and wherever he needs me,” she said. Mar’s family officially asked for Korina’s hand in marriage last week.

The pamanhikan was held in Korina’s family home in Merville, Parañaque. Mar staged a harana with a little help from comedians Tado and Jayson Gainza. He also read a love poem, Balagtasan style.

All the best to Mar and Korina!

Piolo Pascual: I'm a cool dad; I can relate to children

Drama is a road most traveled in Piolo Pascual’s acting book. Seeing Piolo enter the world of Cristy (Kristine Hermosa) and Ross (Derek Ramsay) in ABS-CBN’s Komiks Presents Mars Ravelo’s Nasaan Ka Maruja every Saturday is a welcome change for the TV series. However, it is a surprise to see Piolo perhaps coming in between lovers Cristy and Ross. Piolo has always been the good boy in most of his movies, except for Kahit Isang Saglit where his character Michael has feelings for his best friend’s fiancee.

Piolo’s unexpected appearance in Maruja has nothing to do with the show’s ratings. It was part of the plan to “create excitement and curiosity” among viewers, and to keep up with the series’ mystery-suspense feel.

Although followers of Maruja are puzzled as to what Piolo’s character will bring in the story, one thing is for sure: He holds a secret and is part of Cristy’s past.

Meantime, the good-looking, accommodating actor answers questions of Open Line readers:

How do you maintain your relationship with your son Iñigo who is based in the States? (From Sandie David, Ilocos Sur)

Whenever there’s a chance aside from phone conversation, I go there for events such as graduation. I was there two weeks ago. How often do I call? Every chance I get.

How do you handle ardent, persistent lady admirers? (Shierlane Pelayo, Davao City)

I just smile. I say, “Ha, ha, ha.”

Do you find yourself good-looking? (Vicky Lonboc, Taytay Rizal)

I try to look good because it is my job. It is part of the package to take good care of myself. It comes with the territory.

What type of dad are you? (Erlinda Suarez, Antipolo)

I’m a cool one. I love playing with kids, especially with my son. When we went to Disneyland, I was more kid-like than he. I love to play. I was once a kid. Nakaka-relate ako sa kanya. I play his games. I want to make up for the lost times. And, I don’t want to give him problems. I try to have good memories with him and to be open with him.

Does your entry to Maruja mean that it needs a big star to boost its viewership? (Anima Lora of Manila City)

I just wanted to work with Kristine again. It is a nice project. When they told me about it, (ratings) were never an issue. From Lobo, I also wanted to be seen on primetime before Lovers in Paris. It’s a breaker.

Mylene Dizon commands respect at NYC filmfest

When Mylene Dizon walked on the red carpet at the famed Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City last June 11 to grace the first IndioBravo Film Festival promoting Philippine Cinema globally, there was no uproar or commotion, only gaze of respect and admiration and reserved applause accorded to the likes of Gina Pareño, Cherry Pie Picache, Jaclyn Jose and Gina Alajar.

“Yes,” confirmed Edmund Silvestre (of The Filipino Reporter), Funfare’s Big Apple correspondent, in his latest report, “the teenybopper of the ’90s is slowly inching her way towards the league of the Philippines’ acting luminaries.”

Edmund is right. At 33, Mylene has established an impressive filmography and along the way bagged numerous acting nods, with a cluster of wins: Two Best Actress honors (Cinemalaya and Enpress) for 100, one for Rome & Juliet (Cinema One) and a Best New Actress Award (PMPC Star Awards) for Calvento Files: The Movie, her film debut a year after being launched through Star Circle Batch 2 (with Diether Ocampo, Marvin Agustin and Patrick Garcia, to name some) in 1996.

Edmund noted that in Chris Martinez’s 100, Mylene delivered a tour de force as a cancer-stricken woman who only has 100 days to live. It was one of the most unforgettable films and performances in 2008 screened in various international film festivals. No wonder the organizers of IndioBravo filmfest in New York made sure that 100 would be the opening night selection, along with Mark Meily’s Baler.

“It’s always been one of my main objectives when I joined the industry, to be included in the list of actors that can be considered for good roles,” said the very regal and svelte Mylene in a black long gown that negated signs she just gave birth last April to her second son, Lucas, in Chicago. She was escorted to the New York filmfest by ex-boyfriend Paolo Paraiso and their elder son Tomas, four years old. (Mylene and Paolo came back from Chicago with their children last Monday.)

For Mylene, noteworthy projects can lead to one’s longevity in the acting business.

“That’s why medyo nagiging meticulous din naman kami when it comes to choosing projects,” she pointed out. “Pag tumanggap ako ng trabaho, I try to make sure na makabuluhan and I always do my best na hindi wardi-wardihin ang trabaho. I would do anything required by my role because I really respect my work.”

Mylene looks up to Gloria Romero as a great role model to filmdom’s young generation.

“Napaka-professional niya,” she stated with passion. “Sa edad po niyang ‘yon, she’s still so much respected as an actor. With her status and seniority, she can act like a diva, like a prima donna but you don’t see that in Miss Gloria Romero. She does her job well at wala siyang karekla-reklamo and I can attest to that. She’s nice even to young actresses like me. Maganda ang pakikisama talaga niya. I love her comedic timing; she’s also good in drama. Gusto ko rin maka-trabaho ang mga Ate Vi, mga Ate Guy, mga Ate Maria, mga Ate Shawie,” she laughed, referring to Vilma Santos, Nora Aunor, Maricel Soriano and Sharon Cuneta.

Mylene credited her 2001 film Gatas...Sa Dibdib ng Kaaway for turning her into a full-fledged dramatic actress. The controversial movie, which required her to show one breast, gave Mylene Best Actress nominations in all award-giving bodies, but it also caused a lot of heartaches to her family.

“I consider it my most challenging role, along with Rome & Juliet,” she said. “It led me to where I am now. Kumbaga, I wouldn’t have been cast in good films had I not done Gatas. I have no regrets having done the movie even if at first my family wasn’t so happy about it. It really affected them and I don’t want to put them in the same situation again. Paolo would understand and it would be easy to explain to my children, but not to my parents and siblings.”

Mylene’s last project before flying to the US was the top-rated and highly-acclaimed ABS-CBN soap Tayong Dalawa, playing a young mother to the character of Kim Chiu.

Said Edmund, “It is one of the most watched drama series on The Filipino Channel, along with May Bukas Pa and Only You.”

But Mylene had to bow out of the show to give birth.

Believe it or not, Mylene’s dream project is an action-packed film like Tomb Raider starring Angelina Jolie.

And her dream director?

“Puwede bang Lino Brocka? Hahahaha,” she chuckled, perhaps forgetting that Brocka is dead. “Among the contemporary directors, I like to experience a Chito Roño. Pero natatakot ako kay Chito Roño. Nakakatakot ‘yon, eh; masungit ‘yon, eh. Hahahaha. Everytime we see each other, we always talk and laugh. It’s because he’s very good and he knows what he wants at nakakahiya na nakakatakot pag hindi ka prepared. Pero gusto ko siya.”

Aside from Mylene and Chris Martinez, others who were at the IBFF were directors Mark Meily (Baler), Francis Pasion (Jay) and Mark Reyes (God Only Knows).

Joining them were IBFF executive director Vincent Sandoval, finance director Jonner Nazareno; administrative director Janice Perez, and program director Darlene Malimas; Joseph Francia of GMA International, WCBS News anchor Hazel Sanchez, and writer-producer Christine Dayrit.

The film line-up encompassed a diverse array of genres, themes, directorial voices and even regional flavor: Endo, Tirador, Yanggaw, Dayo, Donsol, Confessional, Carnivore, Himala, Melancholia, My Only You, When Timawa Meets Delgado, and Ang Huling Balyan ng Buhi, plus the short films Kultado, To Siomai Love, Angan-Angan, Kamera, Performing Naturalness, Musa, Kagat ng Dilim, Putot, Lata at Tsinelas and Salat.

John Lloyd Cruz to Ruffa's parents: My intentions are good

ALL'S well that ends well with John Lloyd Cruz and Ruffa Gutierrez and her parents, Eddie Gutierrez and Annabelle Rama. Lloydie had dinner with them at their home accompanied by Star Magic boss Johnny Manahan. This was held before Annabelle left for Hong Kong to accompany son Richard Gutierrez who's having a show there. This was confirmed by Eddie himself when he guested in "The Buzz" for Ruffa's birthday. Ruffa and John Lloyd share the same birthday, June 24. John Lloyd left for the U.S. yesterday, for the Star Magic World Tour in L.A. and San Francisco. Ruffa leaves with her parents today, to hold a benefit show also in L.A. for her Roof-A-Child Foundation.

Eddie said that at their dinner, Lloydie sat beside Annabelle, who's very cordial to him. "I'm really happy to meet them," Lloydie says. "They know now na malinis ang intention ko as a friend. I'm thankful that they welcomed me and Mr. M sa bahay nila sa Dasma."

So what did they talk about? "Nothing much. Casual dinner ito, kuwentuhan about work-related things and nothing really personal. Actually, when we were about to leave, doon lang nagtanong si Tita Annabelle ng 'Totoo bang kayo na talaga ng anak ko'. I laughed and told her 'Hindi po, Tita. Hindi po kami.' Then I turned to Ruffa and said, 'Ang mommy mo, tinatanong ako.' Ganun lang. Nothing really serious na inusig ako or anything. Actually, si Ruffa was the one who suggested na i-meet ko ang mommy niya. I was reluctant noong una kasi, what for? But si Mr. M, siyang nagyaya na puntahan namin sila and I said, sige, let's go. And now I'm glad I did kasi maayos na lahat at wala nang issue sa amin ni Ruffa."

Annabelle, John Lloyd in 'make-peace' meeting

Annabelle Rama won’t confirm it but an unimpeachable Funfare DPA said that she and John Lloyd Cruz had a ‘make-peace’ meeting arranged by Johnny “Mr. M” Manahan, head of the ABS-CBN Talent Center.

The ‘amicable’ meeting came on the heels of Annabelle’s reconciliation with daughter Ruffa Gutierrez (with Annabelle in photo) Monday night last week at the wake for Douglas Quijano at the Heritage Park, Taguig City.

Mother and daughter had been at odds because Annabelle didn’t approve of the rumored romance between Ruffa and John Lloyd who both denied that there is anything romantic between them, contrary to claims by ‘eyewitnesses’ that Ruffa and John Lloyd are often seen together in ‘secret’ dates.

Annabelle was in Hong Kong last Sunday to accompany son Richard Gutierrez who had a show there.

She’s leaving on Thursday with husband Eddie Gutierrez and Ruffa for L.A. for a holiday.

At the same time, John Lloyd is also leaving with ABS-CBN stars for a promo show, also in L.A.

The lovers, er, ‘friends’ share a birthday, June 24. Asked if there’s any chance that Ruffa and John Lloyd might celebrate together, Annabelle said, ‘Ewan ko!’

Piolo Pascual feeling Brad Pitt

Ayon kay Piolo, ginawa niya ang pelikula with the Cannes Film Festival in mind.

It was a humbling but definitely an experience worth repeating,” ani Piolo.

I remember na the very first song that I sang was Strangers in the Night ni Tony Bennet.

Bea Alonzo loses weight

Seriously now, ang desisyon niya raw to lose weight (mga 30 lbs daw ang nawala sa kanya) is because she wanted to.

Sa madalas nga daw na pag-uusap nila ni Direk Lauren Dyogi (who is at the helm of And I Love You So), kinukumbinsi siya nitong mag-two-piece sa isang eksena ng pelikula. But she kept telling daw Direk Lauren na ’di lang sa ’di niya kaya, kung hindi, she didn’t look fit for it.

At sa maniwala daw tayo o hindi, she feels good sa kanyang bagong look. She has now become even fashion conscious.

“I now read mga fashion magazines,” aniya. “I even intend to subscribe to it.”

The day we interviewed Bea for the supposed renewal of her contract with Star Cinema, she was wearing a silver dress na binagayan ng suot niyang black na blazer. Except for her wrist watch, she wasn’t wearing any jewelry. Not even a pair of earrings.

“I’m really not into it,” paliwanag niya. “I’m more into bags and shoes.”

Who takes care of her wardrobe? At sino ang kanyang stylist?

“I take charge of what I wear and how to style myself,” sagot niya.

Sa totoo lang, based on how Bea looks that day, Bea is far from being a baduy.

* * *

She and Shaina Magdayao have remained good friends.

“I’m happy for her.”

Boys may feel intimidated by her, ani Isah Red, when Bea revealed wala siyang manliligaw.

She talked briefly about Mico Palanca, her first boyfriend. But would not reveal why and how they broke up.

She swears she’s happy and we believe her.

Piolo Pascual courting KC Concepcion?

“Wait lang ha, I’ll just text you,” natatawa niyang sagot.

Paano siya manligaw?

“Traditional po ako, eh.”

As in umaakyat siya sa bahay?

Kris Lawrence: I'm not using Katrina

Talk about timing. Just when he was about to launch his new album Moments of Love (MCA Music) with Careless Whisper as carrier single, the controversial sex video between ex-girlfriend Katrina Halili and Dr. Hayden Kho Jr. opened a Pandora’s box of issues.

Is Kris using Katrina? Do they still talk? Has Kris seen the video? A series of questions hound him wherever he goes.

But first things first.

“I already finished recording Careless Whisper and the entire album last year when the sex video issue broke out. The music video has already been shot. I called MCA Music about it when the scandal broke out and it was too late to change anything,” Kris relates.

Just to show he’s not using Katrina to push album sales, Kris adds that he does not want to promote Careless Whisper at all. Sure, it’s his favorite cut in the album. He likes its catchy saxophone introduction and the way it makes him feel. But no thanks. Kris will just focus on the other cuts. And sure, Katrina herself assured Kris she won’t mind if he promotes Careless Whisper. But Kris knows people may put another color to it if he does.

Thus, shoppers will hear Kris’ soothing, suave voice render other cuts in his album besides Careless Whisper when he launches Moments of Love tonight at 8 at Eastwood City Central Plaza. He’ll render other tracks, like Suddenly, Right Here Waiting, Honesty, All My Life, Your Song, Now and Forever, Without You and We All Fall in Love Sometimes.

“I can’t use Katrina,” Kris protests. “She’s someone I love.”

Still, he refuses to say just what caused their break-up. It’s enough, he explains, that “I didn’t leave her” and their decision to part ways was mutual.

Otherwise, why does Kris say the last time he and Katrina talked was just the day before?

“We discuss anything under the sun,” Kris reveals. Concerned that the controversy is taking a toll on Katrina’s emotions, Kris advises her to relax, and “just be yourself.”

If only he can shield her from those who want to tear her to pieces!

Like Hayden? Kris is clearly upset at what Hayden did to Katrina.

“Talking about him is not worth my time,” he asserts.

And if that means living under Katrina’s shadow for the time being, so be it. Kris will not mind.

“She’s successful. She’s my idol. And she’s part of my life,” he reasons out.

As far as Kris is concerned, Katrina will always be part of his life.

“I told her I’ll do anything for her,” he says.

Is a reconciliation imminent?

“Sometimes silence is the best weapon. Less is more,” he answers mysteriously.

As expected, Kris has no regrets about his close encounter with Katrina. Never mind if the press continues to hound him with questions about her all the time.

“Sometimes I don’t wanna talk about it anymore. It sucks,” he admits.

But Kris knows it’s inevitable. It’s the price he has to pay for loving Katrina.

“It’s just one of those things. And I learn from the experience,” he shrugs.

Besides, he can channel all his angst in his songs about loving and longing. Kris is one of the featured artists in I’d Do Anything For You, launching concert of S.A.M. and Samantha Riviera’s 10-track CD Soul Sonata on July 3, 7 p.m. at Music Museum.

Other featured guests are Jenine Desiderio and Filipino-Japanese singer Kaji Wara.

“I met Samantha through a friend,” relates Kris. Thus, he’s eager to help the songwriter-author launch her album, which contains tracks she herself wrote.

Accompanying Soul Sonata is the book S.A.M., subtitled Chronicles of a Woman Who Lives and Loves.

It’s easy to see why Kris and Samantha click. Both love music. Both know the joys and pain of loving and letting go. And yes, both have learned to move on.

They suffered. But they have turned the wounds — however deep — into weapons that make stronger, better. That’s victory with a capital V for you.

Imelda in concert with Melissa Manchester

Last Monday, Funfare reported the “scoop” about Claire dela Fuente having a concert in August with David Soul (Don’t Give Up, etc.), together with Rico J. Puno, at the PICC Plenary Hall, in which they will sing, among other numbers, a Taglish version of Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang which they recorded as a duet for Claire’s new (third) album for Viva Records, titled Claire dela Fuente Timeless.

The other good news is that Imelda Papin is also having her own concert with another music icon, Melissa Manchester no less, on July 31 and Aug. 1 and 2 at the Orleans Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas where Imelda usually mounts her shows.

Imelda told Funfare in a phone interview that Manchester has just signed the contract with 618 International Entertainment, Inc., headed by CEO Oscar Parel.

Of course, Imelda didn’t have to remind us that Melissa is a Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter and actress who was discovered by Bette Midler and Barry Manilow when she appeared in the Manhattan club scene who took her on as one of the Harlettes in 1971. Melissa co-wrote with Carole Bayer Sager many of the songs on her debut album, Home to Myself, which was released in 1973. Two years later, Manchester’s album eponymous album produced her first Top 10 hit, Midnight Blue, which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard charts. Other hits followed, such as Don’t Cry Out Loud, and If This Love. In 1979, she performed two nominated songs on the Academy Awards show, The Promise, and Through The Eyes Of Love (theme song from Ice Castles).

Two years later, she had her biggest hit, You Should Hear How She Talks About You, which won a Grammy for Best Female Vocal Performance and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard charts. Her last Top 10 entry on the Adult Contemporary chart was a 1989 updating of Dionne Warwick’s Walk On By. The single was culled from the album Tribute, which honored some of the singers that influenced her style. In 2008, she released a new single, The Power of Ribbons, to digital retailers. Proceeds from the sales of the single benefit breast cancer research.

Based in the US for years now and happily remarried, Imelda has been performing in the main showrooms of Caesar’s Palace in Atlantic City, New Jersey; and Bally’s in Las Vegas, Nevada (she was the first Filipino artist to perform in the venue). She has also gone on concert tours in Europe, Australia, Asia and other parts of the US, counting among her audience heads of states and members of the royalty.

The Orleans Hotel & Casino honors Imelda for being the only Filipino talent included in its roster of international performers who also include Michael Bolton, Richard Marx, Engelbert Humperdinck, Neil Sedaka, Gladys Knight, Kenny G, Air Supply, Kenny Rogers, Paul Anka, Boys II Men and, yes, Melissa Manchester.

As Funfare reported several issues back, Imelda has just released her latest CD Voice of the Heart, recorded under 618 International Records (a division of 618 International Entertainment, Inc.), and distributed in the US and Canada under the Warner Music Group (ADA).

Also keeping Imelda busy is her TV show Imelda Papin in America aired every second Saturday of the month from 4 to 4:30 p.m. on LA 18; and her two-hour radio program The Imelda Papin Voice of the Heart Radio Show over KLAV 1230 AM (The Talk of Las Vegas) every Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. (can be heard online at www.klav1230am.com).

(Note: For inquiries about Imelda and Melissa’s Las Vegas concert, those in the US West Coast may call the Orleans Hotel & Casino at 702-365-7075 or the toll-free number of 618 International Entertainment, Inc. at 1-877-922-5346.)

John Lloyd Cruz celebrates 26th birthday

JOHN Lloyd Cruz celebrates his 26th birthday on June 24, but Star Magic already hosted a birthday lunch for him on June 17 as he's leaving soon for the Star Magic U.S. Tour. "It's going to be a working birthday kasi magso-show kami sa U.S. sa birthday ko," he says.

Some say he's meeting Ruffa Gutierrez there, who's also celebrating her birthday on June 24. "I'll be meeting some friends in L.A. I know siya naman, meron siyang show dun for her Roof-A-Child Foundation. Ganyan ang nangyari sa 'min noon ni Carmen Soo when we played husband and wife in 'T2'. Yung friendship namin, naunahan ng intriga, so naputol. Lalo na nga, I just came from a relationship at ganun din siya, so parang ang gandang i-link kami dahil hot item, di ba? But at our expense."

What can he say about Annabelle Rama's allegation that he seems to be ashamed of Ruffa? "Ayoko na lang mag-comment doon kasi, if I'd answer, then she'd also answer, mas hahaba, hindi na matatapos. So I will keep my silence na lang. Basta friend ko pa rin si Ruffa, we understand each other at alam namin kung ano ang totoo. I think it's Ruffa who should explain to her mom na magkaibigan lang kami talaga, wala nang iba."

But Annabelle says he woos her and gives to her. "Minsan ko lang siya nabigyan ng food. When I bring food kasi noon sa set ng 'Betty La Fea', it's for everyone. But one time, I brought some pasta na hindi nakain sa taping and I asked her assistant kung gusto kaya 'yun ni Ruffa. Very casual yun na tanong, which I do to everyone. Tapos ayun, nabigyan ng ibang interpretation."

What's his birthday wish? "Wala. I'm not in a mood to celebrate, so basta lilipas lang yung birthday ko, and also, I cannot wish for anything more as I'm already so blessed. I don't even expect to have a party or to have gifts. A simple text message greeting me, masaya na ako run."

What about his gift for Ruffa? "I don't know. Baka may makita ko sa States. Baka shoes. Kasi sinukat ko yung sapatos niya, kasya sa akin," he laughs. "I hope tigilan na talaga ang ganitong intriga dahil hindi pa ako ready for another relationship after the previous one just ended. I want to focus muna on my personal life and my work.

Wendy Valdez says NO to Playboy Philippines

She was offered a role in Desperadas before pero, hindi siya pinayagan ng ABS-CBN.

May offer pa to pose for Playboy Philippines.

So wala munang nangyaring batiin sa mag-ina.

Siguro almost an hour.

Niyakap niya at bumulong ng “I’m sorry.”

“I feel relieved.

But I’ll cross the bridge when I get there.”

We care for each other as friends.

“It took a lot of courage to kiss her and to hug her.

* * *

Pero as much as possible ayaw na niya itong pag-usapan.

So anong bago?

So malabo nga palang maging sila ni John Lloyd?

“Long hair ako. “I’m free like a bird.”

“Marami akong suitors,” sabay ngiti nito.

Zsa Zsa Padilla: Marriage is no longer a priority

When it comes to love, Zsa Zsa Padilla has been there, done that. Six years after waiting for her marriage annulment case in Parañaque to prosper and years after her wedding with Dolphy went pfft, Zsa Zsa just shrugs when asked about marriage.

“It’s not my priority anymore,” she shoots back.

Gone is the down-and-out feeling after her wedding to Dolphy fizzled out. Everything was set — her wedding gown, the invitations, etc. All she and Dolphy needed to do then was send out the invitations.

“Good thing we didn’t send them out,” Zsa Zsa looks back.

Good thing, too, youngest daughter Zia, now 18, comforted her distraught mom.

“It was Zia who opened my eyes,” relates Zsa Zsa. “She told me people get married to make a fresh start: Seal a relationship, have a family. I did the reverse. I already have kids (three to be exact: Karylle, Nicole and Zia).”

And so, Zsa Zsa — and Dolphy — has nothing more to prove. So why worry about getting married?

What matters most is what she and Dolphy have in their hearts. And it’s been there for more than two decades, long enough to be as permanent as indelible ink.

Zsa Zsa has a term for it: Unchanging love. Dolphy, so wrote Zsa Zsa in her latest album and debut CD for PolyEast Philippines, is “what unchanging love is all about.”

“You continue to inspire me with the unconditional love that only you can give,” she wrote of Dolphy in her album sleeve.

And so Unchanging Love is not only the title of her comeback album. It’s also one of the tracks in the album, and indicates how much she values her 26-year-old singing career.

She’s been around for so long, Zsa Zsa jokes, the new writers in the recent album launch must be more familiar with her daughter Karylle than they with her (Zsa Zsa’s) songs. New composers, new technicians, new everything have emerged.

“I learned my lesson,” Zsa Zsa says about her long absence in the recording scene. “I didn’t know my Viva (recording) contract bound me for five years.”

So she’s making up for lost time. She’s packing in the revivals in the Unchanging Love two-CD special edition. It’s the in thing these days. So you hear remakes like Memories (Joey Albert), Nais Ko (Miguel Vera), Nasasaktan (Reuben Laurente), Muli (Vina Morales), Changes (Carla Martinez), Ikaw Lang (Chad Borja) and Kung Alam Mo Lang (Joanne Lorenzana).

Yes, Unchanging Love may be an album of revivals. But that doesn’t mean Zsa Zsa has forgotten her OPM roots. After all, it was good old OPM numbes, like Mambobola, Hiram and Ikaw Lamang that made Zsa Zsa a household name back in the mid-‘80s.

So she threw in three new OPM ballads, Iibigin Kita Muli, Kung and Pagmamahal na Walang Wakas in her new album’s playlist.

Next time around though, she promises to return to OPM mode. And that means her next album will be as OPM as can be.

This much, she owes herself — and her fans.

Billy Crawford grooves with the oldies

At a time when CD sales are down, why do you think record companies still continue to spend a small fortune on packaging? Well, a nice album cover pleases the vanity factor in the artist and draws buyers while on display. And best of all, if the box is uniquely attractive, it keeps fans away from downloading or getting pirated copies. You get no CD case when you download and pirated CDs come with cheap desktop printed covers which make them look like what they are, stolen.

I thought about this when I got hold of Billy Crawford’s new CD Groove. It comes in a celluloid box with a great photo of Billy. The kid is aging well. The former child star has stopped being cute and gracefully grew up a handsome young man. Nice. And that box would make a good display case for an action figure or two. Maybe I’ll put in those little Pokemons. That is actually very appropriate because Billy’s first big break in the US was to do the theme song for the soundtrack of The Pokemon Movie.

I also thought of how Billy must feel about Groove. He really has only two choices. One is frustrated and downhearted. This guy is used to working with originals. He sang and danced his way to the charts with some of the best producers and songwriters in Europe and the US. He has sold millions of albums worldwide and has Gold and Platinum awards to show for it. Urgently In Love, Mary Lopez, Trackin’, When You Think About Me, Steamy Nights and You Didn’t Expect That were among his big sellers. So what is he doing now, recording an album of covers?

On the other hand though, he must be feeling fulfilled and elated nowadays. Despite his big name out there, I cannot think of another country that would give him a chance to record these modern classics. Maybe they will do so in 20 or 40 years in some sort of retrospective, but not now save in this cover crazy country of ours. And Billy went all out with some of the most popular songs of recent times, tunes he grew up with, that he joyfully remembers and most of all that he had dreamed of also recording.

Take a look at the list he came up with. Steal Away by Robbie Dupree; Sexy Eyes by Dr. Hook; Rock with You and Human Nature by Michael Jackson; Let’s Groove by Earth Wind & Fire; Could It Be I’m Falling in Love by The Spinners; Lovely Day by Bill Withers; Never Let Her Slip Away, How Sweet It Is and You’ve Got A Friend by James Taylor the latter as a duet with girlfriend Nikki Gil; Someone by El Debarge; Mercy Mercy Me by Marvin Gaye; One Last Cry by Brian McKnight; and as bonus tracks, acoustic versions of You’ve Got A Friend and Human Nature and a Silverfilter remix of Steal Away.

It is quite a line-up and should go big with buyers who like the familiar interpreted by a local name they recognize. But what I really like about the album is the discovery that Billy has soul. I do not mean the dance R&B sort he used to do but the old kind associated with the likes of Bill Withers. It is cool and sweet and groovy and is the kind you do not acquire but have to be born with. That is why he worked well with Mercy, Mercy Me and Lovely Day and the biggest surprise of all, Rock with You, which given the excellent original is quite an accomplishment.

Meanwhile, the video of Back in Time, an R&B original by Kyla & Jay-R, is on top of last week’s Pinoy MYX countdown by MYX.

Others in the list are Antukin by Rico Blanco; Manila by Sandwich; Walang Iwanan by 6Cyclemind; Sandali Na Lang by Hale; Ayt! by Sponge Cola and Gary V; Wala by Kamikazee; Tabi by Paraluman and Kean Cipriano; Kumot at Unan by Richard Poon; Love Will Set Us Free by The Dawn; You Changed My Life by Sarah Geronimo; Hay Naku by Silent Sanctuary; Torres by Mayonaise; May 1 by Archipelago; Always You by Charice; Almost Over You by Karylle; Photograph by Paolo Santos; So Be It by Hilera; Salita by Angulo; and Princesa ng Kaba by Sopiz.

Judy Ann Santos at Ryan Agoncillo, nagtitipid!

Kasama rin nga pala sa George and Cecil sina Tessie Tomas, Malou de Guzman, Al Tantay, Ina Asistio, Dino Imperial at ang mag-asawang Christopher Roxas at Gladys Reyes. This is written and directed by Jose Javier Reyes.

Annabelle on John Lloyd: Kung love niya si Ruffa, aminin niya

ANNABELLE Rama wants to make it clear that she doesn't have anything personal against John Lloyd Cruz. She was supposed to guest in the showbiz talk show, "Startalk" to clear this up but Ruffa Gutierrez's kids, Lorin and Venice, who behave like older kids and not 5 and 4 years old, stopped her from doing so.

Are her apos against John Lloyd? "No, gusto nga nila kasi they watched 'Betty La Fea' and they know him as Armando. When he appears on TV, tilian nga sila, 'Lola, si Armando, o!'

Ruffa says she wants to smoke the peace pipe and continues to text her but she doesn't respond. "Nag-respond naman ako. When she texted me she got her talent fee for one of her endorsements, sabi niya, gusto ko raw ba kunin ang commission ko. I responded, Ipadala mo, and she did.

Does she believe Ruffa and John Lloyd are really on?

Pokwang in hot water for illegal display of RP flag

FOR displaying boxing gloves with the Philippine flag design, ABS- CBN’s comedienne Pokwang and Wowowee’s producers are in hot water.

This developed as Malacañang is backing a measure approved in third and final reading at the House of Representatives imposing stiffer penalties of up to two-year imprisonment and fine of P100,000 for violations of the Philippine flag law.

The new measure by Marikina City Rep. Del de Guzman is an amendment of Republic Act No. 8491 or the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines issued last February 12, which increases the penalties against violators of the law from not less than P5,000 but not more than P20,000, and to not more than one year imprisonment, or both.

Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said that the Palace is supporting the measure to further instill our sense of patriotism especially following the celebration last June 12 of our 111th Independence Day.

Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) chairperson Ma. Consoliza P. Laguardia said that the MTRCB will still call the attention of the ABS-CBN especially the producers of the Willie Revillame-starrer “Wowowee” TV show.

Laguardia said that the board has conducted three weeks ago a free seminar to all TV networks in the country about the provisions and penalties imposed in the Philippine flag law.

Laguardia disclosed that “Pokwang has readily apologized on air after she committed the grave mistake.”

Nonetheless, the board hinted that Pokwang is not yet off the hook.

It will be recalled that concert king Martin Nievera drew the flak owing to his wrong rendition of the Philippine National Anthem or “Lupang Hinirang” violative of the law during the May 5 Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton bout at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Zsa Zsa Padilla still mad at Dingdong for hurting Karylle

ZSA ZSA Padilla's last album was made seven years ago with Viva Records. She has since moved to PolyEast, where her daughter Karylle released an album recently. Why the seven-year gap?

"I was fighting kasi for an all original OPM album but Viva failed to give it to me," she says. "Then this offer from PolyEast came, 'Unchanging Love'. Hindi rin all original, sa next album ko na raw yun, but it does have original Tagalog songs, 'Kung', 'Iibigin Kita Muli' and 'Pagmamahal na Walang Wakas'."

After singing with Hotdog briefly, Zsa Zsa went solo with the song "Kahit Na" exactly 26 years ago. "I'm glad I'm still around and continues to record new albums."

What does she intend to do with Dolphy on Father's Day and when he celebrates his birthday in July? "Wala pang plans. Di ba dapat, his kids should plan for him for Father's Day. As for his birthday, I'm sure there'll be a celebration. Last year was memorable kasi ABS gave him a concert and named their theatre after him."

Is it true she's eligible now to marry but she no longer wants to walk down the aisle with Dolphy? "No. My annulment case is still going on. There's a story to that but I'm not allowed to discuss it. Six years na 'yung annulment case, baka ma-extend pa if I talk about it. There was a time we planned the wedding na at nang di matuloy, I went into a deep depression at naging traumatic for me. But a doctor friend told me that weddings are usually done to start a married life. In our case ni Dolphy, more than 20 years na kami and what else do we have to prove daw? Which is true naman, mas matagal pa kami kaysa other showbiz marriages. We have nothing else to prove as our relationship has withstood the test of time. Noon nga, pronounced pa ang age difference namin. But now, I'm 45 and he's 81, kaya malapit na kaming mag-abot."

Is she happy with the way ABS handles Karylle's career? "Oo naman. If there's an upside sa breakup that happened to her, it's the fact that people saw the grace in her. I'm really proud that she's a graceful person. I must have done something good and even Dolphy said, Oo nga, ang babait ng mga anak mo."

Has she seen Dingdong Dantes after the split? "Not yet. I'm praying for that nga, e, kasi I don't know how I'd feel dahil nakita ko kung paano nasaktan ang anak ko. Kung si Kay, graceful about it, ako, napo-provoke, e. I just hope we'll have a good encounter. The truth is may pictures pa siya sa bahay namin up to now kasi we really considered him a part of our family."

How does she feel about the trouble that her friend Dr. Vicki Belo is facing right now, considering she's a Belo endorser? "I don't know, nakikitsismis din lang ako, e. I haven't seen the videos and I have no itention of seeing them. I pray she'll get through this unscathed. Lilipas din naman ito."

Vicki fell for a much younger man. Would she consider herself wiser as she fell for a much older man? "I guess so, but if you're old, siguro having a much younger partner does make you feel better, which must be the reason why Dolphy fell for me. But no matter what your ages are, the important thing is to just have mutual love and respect for each other."

Piolo Pascual to be painted shirtless

No KC Concepcion video

In a country where gossip travels faster than light, expect interesting twists and turns to current issues.

In the wake of the sex videos involving Dr. Hayden Kho and Katrina Halili (and two other girls who haven’t come out yet, one an ABS-CBN starlet and the other a Brazilian model), other names have cropped up as also having their own “videos,” including Rufa Mae Quinto (denied), Bea Alonzo (denied), Phoemela Baranda (denied) and KC Concepcion.

The thing to do is to trash those rumors as just that — trash.

Meanwhile, The Belo Medical Group has issued the following statement:

In light of recent rumors surrounding the actress KC Concepcion and The Belo Medical Group, we would like to categorically state that Ms. Concepcion has never visited any of our branches at any time. Likewise, we wish to reiterate that The Belo Medical Group has never used any device, whether video or audio, to secretly record the activities of its patients.

We challenge anyone to present proof of this absurd allegation, confident that no such evidence exists. There is no logical reason why a business of our size, track record and reputation would ever invest in such a worthless endeavor. More importantly, we value and uphold the privacy of our clients.

We strongly condemn all those responsible for spreading this harmful gossip. Furthermore, we cannot help but wonder why anyone would wish to tarnish the reputation of Ms. Concepcion and The Belo Medical Group based solely on false hearsay.

“It’s not true! But now that I’m turning a year older it’s better to have my own place. I have a condo in Greenhills, pero ‘di ko pa alam kung du’n ako titira. There’s nothing wrong if I have a place of my own. Thankful ako sa parents ko na tinanggap kami sa bahay nila, but it’s high time to have my own place. We’ll still visit them, we can have dinner.”

Cinema One Originals presents Kuwentong UPCAT

Cinema One Originals’ winning film UPCAT screens at the Indiesine of the Robinsons Galleria from June 10 to 16.

Directed by Carlo Roman Olivarez in a screenplay by Inna Miren Salazar and Alfred Geoffrey Reyes, UPCAT stars Bembol Roco, Mark Gil, Felix Roco, Joseph Roble, Hiyasmin “Yas” Neri and Malou Crisologo.

Ito ang Kuwentong UPCAT ni Lucas,” the State University’s famous college entrance exam acronym this time becomes a coming-of-age melodrama that shows the dreams and aspirations, hopes and fears and the roads in the academe teens take to make it in college. UPCAT follows the personal journey and growth of two high school seniors and buddies who believe passing the UPCAT will be a passport to their dreams.

One of the finalists in the 2008 Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival, UPCAT garnered support in its screening at the UP Film Institute Theater in Diliman Campus following the awards nights in November last year. It also became the festival’s top-grosser in its December screening. The Happy Endings Film production is juxtaposed with the background music of Raimund Marasigan. UPCAT was acclaimed by students and professionals.

UPCAT at the IndieSine of the Robinsons Galleria is part of the continuing celebration of Cinema One’s 15 years of leadership in the local cable viewing arena.
