Kattlin Laas Big Brother Finland, enters Pinoy Big Brother Double Up

Straight from Big Brother Finland, sexy Estonian-born Kattlin Laas will arrive to Manila today for the big swap of ABS-CBN’s Pinoy Big Brother Double Up.

Despite weather forecasts about a coming storm, Big Brother is pushing through with one of the biggest twists of the season where a housemate from Finland will trade places with a local housemate, Cathy Remperas (right), the Charming Babe of Bohol.

The 22-year-old Finnish housemate admitted to the Finnish Big Brother that she is not fluent in English. A food processing worker, Kattlin describes herself as a positive and cheerful person. Her weakness, meanwhile, is her short temper. She hates people with oversized ego, people who lie a lot, and people-pleasers.

Will Kattlin be able to relate to the Pinoy housemates? Will she be able to adjust to the culture and language? What foreign traits and culture will she introduce to the housemates and the Filipino audience?

Find out how Cathy will do in Finland by following Big Brother’s secretary on Twitter. Just search PBBSecretary and click follow. Don’t miss Kattlin’s first days inside the PBB house today after Maalaala Mo Kaya and tomorrow, Nov. 1, after George & Cecil. See the highlights of the past week in PBB Weekend Primetime at 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays on Studio 23.

M.Y.M.P. breaks up!

Win some, lose some?

It’s true.

The other night, the duo M.Y.M.P. (Make Your Mama Proud) Juris Fernandez and Chin Alcantara won the top award for Group Artist of the Year at the first Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) Star Awards for Music held at the Sky Dome of SM North EDSA.

It was a happy-sad victory for the duo who wasn’t present at the awards. Instead, it was talent manager Noel Ferrer who received the trophy on their behalf.

“I was asked to do the honor by the manager of M.Y.M.P.,” said Noel. “The manager told me to get the trophy kung sakaling manalo ang M.Y.M.P.”

Noel called up the manager to congratulate him and M.Y.M.P. and that’s when he got a little shocker.

The manager thanked Noel and said, “Congrats sa album natin. Pero ‘yon na ang last nina Juris at Chin as a duo. Juris is going solo.”

Sad, isn’t it? As the song goes, some good things never last...

“Nalungkot ako,” sighed Noel.

Funfare did some sleuthing and here’s what I dug up:

Juris quit the duo after Chin “booted” her and her manager Carla Lozada out due to disagreement over an “exposure” in the A.S.A.P. Sessionista.

Added Noel, “Juris is slated to launch her long-overdue solo album under Star Records, with five songs produced by Chin. The other original cuts were done by Jimmy Antiporda, Ryan Cayabyab and Gary Valenciano.”

No, Juris won’t be using her M.Y.M.P. “connection” anymore.

According to Noel, Chin told her, “Magkakamatayan tayo kapag ginamit n’yo ang pangalan ng M.Y.M.P. But what’s in a name? The people are after Juris’ voice, not so much the duo’s name. She will sound just as well even under another name.”

But still, Juris and Chin still have commitments as a duo until end of this year and they will honor them, thank you.

“Juris is excited about her new career as a solo artist,” assured Noel. “She’s looking forward to a happy brand-new year.”

Meanwhile, Chin is looking for a new partner.

Rachelle Ann Go at Gab Valenciano, malabo nang magkabalikan

Obvious na masakit, lalo on the part of Rachelle Ann, ang naging dahilan ng paghihiwalay nila, which is the exact opposite sa kasalukuyang namamagitan sa another estranged couple, sina Luis Manzano at Angel Locsin.

According to Angel, Luis was among the celebrities na pinadalhan nila ni Anne Curtis ng solicitation letter for their Shop and Share project for the victims of Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.

Luis, in turn, sent them several items, some even mga bago.

Angel and Anne plan to turn over whatever amount they have generated from the project to the Philippine National Red Cross.

They think it’s the proper agency that would know kung ano ang pangangailangan ng mga biktima.

Angel doubts, though, kung ang usapang reconciliation will happen between her and Luis. She thinks mas mabuti kung maging magkaibigan muna sila.

Meanwhile, the actress announced na sa January, magsisimula na siyang mag-siyuting for her movie with Aga Muhlach under director Olive Lamasan.

Mukhang okay sina Angel and Luis living their separate lives.

The sound of true champions

It was quite a title for a concert, True Champions, the Best of the Best. I can only think of two types of reaction from those involved. They could have gotten cold feet over so much expectation and required a title change or to have taken it to heart and performed with all their might. And to the delight of all those who came to watch at the Sky Dome in SM EDSA last Saturday evening, Rachelle Ann Go and Jed Madela did just that. They proved they were true champions.

Now there are champions and there are champions. These singing wonders grow out of the woodwork around here and they all have their own good qualities. Among all of them though, Rachelle Ann and Jed are the ones known for flawless singing. This does not only mean the ability to reach the high notes and do vocal calisthenics. Several trophies from here and abroad already attest to that. It is also in their ability to be expressive interpreters. They seem to be able to make listeners feel their songs more than others.

And feel we did as we watched them go from one audience pleaser to another starting with a medley of their early hits Don’t Cry Out Loud for Rachelle Ann and Let Me Love You for Jed.

Rachelle Ann went for the drama with The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and Over the Rainbow, was a sinuous dancer in a sexy, ballad version of the Korean hit Nobody and surprisingly funny in her divas impersonation medley.

Jed was no slouch in the comedy department either as he did Manny Pacquiao, Para Sa Iyo, Arnel Pineda, Open Arms and would you believe, even Charice Pempengco, I’ll Always Love You. Of course, his best moments were the ballads like Do I Make You Proud, Separated and a sentimental medley of telenovela themes that went from Tayong Dalawa to Kung Nasaan Ka Man.

It was however the duets that made the evening truly memorable. It was their first show together and it looked like they have at last finally discovered the ideal singing partner. This was true whether it is a soulful duet like Baby Come To Me, an enchanting Narito or a soaring Co Te Partiro. Great show. A repeat would be nice. The only problem I see with this fantastic tandem is that they might find it hard to perform on the same level with other singers from now on.

More singing champions news. Come Nov. 7, it will be Sarah Geronimo’s turn to strut her stuff at the Araneta Coliseum with her solo concert Record Breaker. The show coincides with the release of two new albums, My Christmas Girl, her first Christmas album and Music & Me, an all covers collection featuring new recordings like Right Here Waiting, Lost In Your Eyes and Listen To Your Heart plus previously released hits like Somebody New In My Life, A Very Special Love and You Changed My Life.

In the charts, up on top is Christian Bautista, who incidentally, will be among the guests in Sarah’s concert. Christian’s latest big seller and which might be his biggest hit ever is Romance Revisited, The Songs of Jose Mari Chan. The CD includes his duet of Please Be Careful With My Heart with Sarah and the hit single Tell Me Your Name.

And just who you think is the most ubiquitous champion of the moment? It is Mark Bautista, whose mug is featured in those Mang Inasal ads that are all over the place. Mark looks so cute savoring chicken inasal, which I was happy to find out, tastes really good and is most affordable, too.

Meanwhile if you want more of Rachelle Ann and Jed, you might want to check out their latest albums. Rachelle Ann’s is In Love, which is made up of romantic standards like If, Somebody Waiting, All The Things You Are, Traces, Let The Pain Remain, You And Me Against The World and others.

Jed’s is Songs Rediscovered 2, The Ultimate OPM Playlist which is made up of local compositions in English like To Love Again, I Need You Back, Special Memory, Got To Let You Know, I’ll Always Stay In Love This Way, A Smile In Your Heart and others.

Ruffa Gutierrez goes ukay-ukay

Clothes make the man. Thus, men power dress for a boardroom meeting and women slip into that black dress for a night-out.

Ruffa Gutierrez’s character in Ukay-Ukay, episode of Regal Films’ Shake, Rattle & Roll XI, however, owns a piece of clothing which wrinkles her once smooth-as- silk life.

“I’ll be fighting an evil spirit,” says Ruffa of her latest movie. “That’s the reason why I’m in a harness. I have been Twitting about it that I’m always training in a harness. (People) think I have some (super) power. But what they don’t realize is that I’m having a fight scene with a demon who is throwing me around.”

For the Metro Manila Film Festival in December, we will see a simple Ruffa, a far cry from the high-maintenance Patricia of Desperadas, US-bred Abigail of My Monster Mom and scheming, fashion-forward Daniella of I Love Betty La Fea.

“She’s an interior designer,” shares Ruffa. “She loves vintage items. I’m a bit more tame here with less make-up. I wear glasses in most scenes.”

The artist in Ruffa does underacting and breaks down stereotypes in horror-suspense films, like screaming while doing long, winding chase scenes.

“I’m trying to come up with a character who fights a demon. She’s strong,” says Ruffa, who will somehow show that today’s women have their own mind and cannot be threatened easily by visible or invisible entities.

The latest Shake also marks Ruffa’s second appearance in the movie franchise. The first was in the mid-‘90s directed by then debuting Don Escudero. She was paired with Monsour del Rosario. Ruffa recalls they shot scenes in Daranak Falls, Tanay and she screamed a lot.

Looking back, the actress says the suspense and horror films have evolved since. Now, young creative directors bank on visuals, shoot in digital and use special effects to set an eerie, hair-raising atmosphere.

“It is timely because a lot of people go to ukay-ukay,” says Ruffa. “I’m warning them to be careful. There may come a time they get a dress haunted by a spirit.”

Unlike Snooky Serna’s blusang itim and the magic kamison, the dress brings crazy, unusual things in the life of Ruffa’s character. It also takes a peek at her character’s past and explains why the spirit stubbornly haunts and, worse, possesses her.

Ukay-Ukay is Ruffa’s reunion with her onscreen partner Zoren Legaspi. The team-up will bring back teenage memories and movies such as Island of Desire.

The way things are going in show business, it’s not every day we see former lovers like Ruffa and Zoren remaining good friends. Ruffa says it is also nice to see ex-couples who still look so good — without those extra pounds and “tell-tale” lines.

What scares Ruffa?

She says anything that will shock her more than the scary face. Horror films and cockroaches are also on her list.

With what she has gone through in life, Ruffa (mother of two) has emerged empowered and become an inspiration to young women. She fears going to hell but doesn’t worry about things like work because she knows God will provide.

Is she afraid of growing old alone and lonely?

The answer is still a no. After all, Ruffa has the Gutierrez family and daughters Lorin and Venice behind her.

“I’m also very thankful to Sharon and her hubby, Kiko Pangilinan, for the support they gave to my brother Noynoy.”

“Doing this movie is only a little favor compared to what she has done for me and my family. It’s the only way I can give a meaningful gift to Mother Lily, a gift of my time and presence.”

Korina Sanchez, Mar Roxas wedding

It was a people’s wedding for Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas II and broadcast journalist Korina Sanchez as thousands shared the simple but elegant affair where the couple vowed to love each other for the rest of their lives.

Loud cheers were heard outside the Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City, first when the couple arrived and later, when they were pronounced husband and wife.

The wedding was really planned to be enjoyed with the people.

The original venue for a grand reception was the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City but this was scrapped to reach out to even more Filipinos as the couple decided to donate their more than P2-million budget for the event to the victims of recent calamities.

Instead, onlookers were provided with food packs while guests had sandwiches, biscuits, native delicacies and drinks inside the premises of the church.

The couple was also blessed with good weather that made it easier for people to come and watch the affair in and arounbd the church.

“Fulfillment of all I’ve waited for”

Mar and Korina, who were engaged for five years before getting married, made their personal vows as the groom kissed the hand and temple of the bride every now and then during the ceremony.

Roxas described his bride as “God’s precious gift” to him and said he would treat her not only as his wife but also as his best friend.

“I love you as you are. You are precious to me. I am happy we are together and truly thank you for taking me and putting up with me. I give myself to you as your best friend, to applaud when you succeed and encourage when you stumble. I offer myself to you as your husband in respect and in trust. Today I take you to be my wife. I promise to be with you and be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love and honor you all the days of my life,” Roxas said.

For her part, Sanchez said her vows in Filipino, saying Roxas was the fulfillment of everything she dreamed of in a husband.

Magkasama tayong ngingiti, tatawa, hahalakhak sa malaki man na tagumpay at sa pinakamababaw na biro,” Sanchez said to her groom.

She promised Roxas that she would be there for him for the rest of their lives.

Tears of joy

Sanchez became emotional as she walked down the aisle to meet her groom. She did not wear the traditional veil on her Filipiniana-inspired piña wedding gown.

As she stepped out of the bridal car, the crowd screamed her name even as she was covered by a cream-colored cloth on the way to the church door, which was closed after members of the entourage came in to give the bride a dramatic entrance.

Roxas became teary-eyed too as Sanchez walked down the aisle. He came an hour earlier on board his trademark pedicab and shook hands with those waiting outside. He then marched with his mother, Judy Araneta-Roxas, while Sanchez was escorted by her brothers Milano, Miguelito and Emmanuel Ruiz.

Roxas used the pedicab in his infomercials to show he was one with the poor and will help them in uplifting their lives.

The Philippine Madrigal Singers sang “Ave Maria” as the entourage marched toward the altar.

Sanchez shed tears as singer Ray An Fuentes gave his rendition of “Umagang Kay Ganda” as background. The song is a personal favorite of Roxas because the lyrics talked about the happiness of being together and that waking up with each other would always make a beautiful
morning.

In his homily, Fr. Carmelo Caluag told the couple that their wedding was an opportunity to begin anew, heal all wounds and correct past mistakes.

“I believe that giving one’s self to love brings blessing to one’s self and to society,” he said.

At the end of the matrimonial ceremony, the couple kissed for 11 seconds as Basil Valdez sang his classic “Ngayon at Kailanman.”

Who’s who

The wedding was attended by the who’s who in the Philippine society. Former President Joseph Estrada and Vice President Noli de Castro led the guests from the political sector while Kris Aquino-Yap, whose son James Jr. was ring bearer, came with other showbiz personalities.

Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, the presidential bet of the Liberal Party and running mate of Roxas, was one of the sponsors. Representatives from various political organizations and non-government organizations were also among the guests.

Mar, Korina wedding is today

After five years together, a two-day postponement (from Oct. 25 to 27), two-life altering events (a political decision and a super typhoon), Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas and broadcast journalist Korina Sanchez walk down the aisle of the Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City today before some 2,000 guests in what has long been touted as the “Wedding of the Year.”

The Roxas-Sanchez nuptials unite high society with the working middle class, politics and show business, the newsmaker and the news reporter. And despite bets (mostly from women) that it wouldn’t push through, tales of disapproval and political strategizing (mostly from men), the wedding unfolds in what the groom describes as the beginning of “a great adventure.”

Roxas says no one knows what the future will bring, “what and where every twist and turn will be, what the peaks and troughs are, what the surprises will be.”

“The only certainty is magkasama naming haharapin ang lahat na ito (we will face all this together),” Roxas, 52, who has a 15-year-old son Paolo Gerardo, told The STAR. Paolo will be his father’s best man.

“I’m looking forward to it. It’s like starting off on a great adventure with a traveling companion, someone I want to be with,” Roxas added. “The adventure is not in what we’ll see or encounter but that whatever it is, it is Korina who is with me and we’ll go through it together.”

The “adventure” will begin with an eight-day honeymoon in Japan after the wedding.

Sanchez, 45, who will wear a Pepito Albert wedding gown of embroidered piña that she will accent with antique tambourine brooches belonging to her late mother Celia, told The STAR that for Roxas, she is ready to say goodbye to her 25-year career in broadcast journalism.

“As I have agreed to marry, I am even closer to saying goodbye to my 25-year career in news. I will continue doing Rated K but hard-core journalism may have to wait a while before I can get back to it. This is a very serious matter for me and a difficult decision to have made. Mar knows how much I love him,” she said.

Roxas gave up his presidential bid just over a month ago to give way to Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, one of today’s principal sponsors. They are running under the Liberal Party, to which their late fathers, Senators Gerardo Roxas and Benigno Aquino Jr., respectively, belonged.

Aside from Aquino, the sponsors are Chief Justice Reynato Puno, former Senate president Jovito Salonga, ABS-CBN president Eugenio Lopez III, Jorge Araneta, Red Cross governor Rosa Rosal, broadcast journalist Cheche Lazaro, Ruby Roxas, Baby Fores and Helen Costales.

Aside from her mother’s brooches, Sanchez will wear one of her late father Ramon’s cufflinks “somewhere on my body.” She says she will miss her parents, “who came from families of meager means but worked hard and well to afford the good life they gave us, their children.”

“My parents will be part of this ceremony, no matter what,” Sanchez vowed.

Sanchez admitted that having been an independent-minded journalist and commentator, adjusting to the role of political wife would not be easy. “I’ve never liked politics, I like it even less now that I am so close to it. So marrying into politics is not a prospect I particularly savor.”

But she is entering into the marriage with eyes wide open, saying, “I am aware of whom I said yes to marrying. I think he also is aware of who he has asked to marry him.”

Due to the devastation wrought on the country a month ago by tropical storm “Ondoy,” the couple has decided to forgo a reception at the Araneta Coliseum and instead donate the money earmarked for the reception to rehabilitation efforts.

In a daze

Roxas, who had withdrawn from the presidential race to give way to Aquino, has always said that matters of the heart were separate from politics when speculations floated that his wedding might also be called off.

“Ask me tomorrow about how I feel,” Roxas said as he admitted he was in a daze.

Yesterday afternoon, Roxas and Aquino swore in to the LP local executives from Cavite led by Gov. Erineo “Ayong” Malicsi, who were previously allied with the administration and the LP group led by Environment Secretary Lito Atienza.

The Filipiniana-themed wedding at the Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City at 3 p.m. is expected to gather the who’s who in politics and show business as well as representatives from various political organizations, non-government organizations and communities.

“We can sacrifice our dream wedding. What’s important is that we’re finally getting married,” said Sanchez, whose matron of honor will be Dang Cecilio-Palanca.

The ring bearer will be actress Kris Aquino’s son, James Yap Jr., while Miguel Sanchez and Matthew Garcia will be the coin and Bible bearers, respectively.

Aquino quipped during the program for the swearing in of Cavite leaders that he was at first reluctant to be the godfather of Roxas and Sanchez because “I would like to be married too” someday.

He said there was a traditional Filipino belief that single men who become sponsors at a wedding would remain bachelors. Roxas said it was not true because he stood as sponsor in many weddings before he himself decided to marry.

Aquino told reporters he could not say no to his friends Roxas and Sanchez and agreed to stand as sponsor in place of his mother, the late President Corazon Aquino.

Aquino, an ex-boyfriend of Sanchez, said he had not yet prepared a gift for his godchildren and that he was happy for them.

He said there would probably be no need for him to give any advice as godfather because “the two are not having any problems.”

Aquino said he would like to have his own family too but at the moment his engagement was to the people and marriage would have to wait.

Meanwhile, Malacañang wished Roxas and Sanchez good luck in their new life as a married couple. –

Cristine Reyes doesn't mind being a Horror Queen

No, Cristine Reyes doesn’t really mind being tagged as the new Horror Queen on account of her current starrers, Patient X (co-produced by GMA Films and R Gutz Productions, the new company put up by Cristine’s leading man Richard Gutierrez) and Ang Darling Kong Aswang (2009 Metro Filmfest entry of OctoArts Films and M-ZET Films, with Vic Sotto).

“Doing Patient X was scary,” said Cristine (now a Viva contract star) who hasn’t fully recovered from the trauma inflicted by Typhoon Ondoy which left her, her mom (former actress Venus Imperial) and two little nephews stranded on the roof for hours. “Okey lang tawagin akong Horror Queen basta may kadugtong — Comedy-Horror Queen.”

And then she laughed, stopping only when asked how she’s coping with post-Ondoy “stress” (to put it mildly).

“I seem to have developed a phobia for rain, lalo na kapag malakas na ulan,” admitted Cristine. “I sat on the set of Aswang when there was a thunderstorm. My first impulse was to run...but where to? Sometimes, I would wake up breathing hard from a bad dream where I’m being chased by a faceless man. It’s a recurring dream at ang setting ay palaging Provident Village.”

Luckily, Cristine doesn’t need any professional help, knowing that time will, as they say, heal the wounds.

“No, I haven’t gone back to our house in Provident Village (Marikina, one of the areas hardest hit by Ondoy). I went there only once just to check the extent of the damage. My mom and I are temporarily staying in Ate (Ara Mina’s) house in the Batasan area in Quezon City. I just bought a house nearby and we’re planning to move there soon.”

The best lesson she said she has learned from her Ondoy experience was not to be too attached to material things.

“Anytime puede ‘yon mawala. That’s what our elders say and they are right.”

Her outlook in life has been changed radically, too.

“I used to be secretive about my feelings. I seldom said, ‘I love you!’ Things have changed. I’m more transparent now, open with my feelings. I can say ‘I love you’ to my loved ones very easily now. I realized that the best time to say ‘I love you’ to anybody is when they’re still around.”

Cristine hastened to add that she hasn’t said “I love you” yet to one particular guy, not even to Patient X co-star Richard Gutierrez who, she insisted, is “just a friend” even if he gave her special treatment on the set, quick to provide her with whatever she needed.

Last linked to Dennis Trillo, Cristine said that she’s putting her love life “on hold.”

“I’ll make sure that the next guy I get involved with is really worth my time.”

In Patient X, director Yam Laranas’ first work after The Echo (the Hollywood remake of the Regal flick Sigaw, still showing in some theaters in Metro Manila), Cristine took over from Heart Evangelista (who backed out after she was haunted in her dreams by a “ghost” she saw on the set) in the role of a patient (Richard plays her doctor) shrouded in mystery.

“I easily identified with the role even if I have ceased to be a ‘mystery’ girl in real life,” Cristine said in jest.

She’s starring in an ABS-CBN teleserye which will start rolling as soon as the right leading man is chosen.

“Do I have a choice? Wala lang. Okey sa akin whoever ABS-CBN will choose.”

A wake-up call for Carmen Soo

Even the coolest celebrities lose their composure in the face of threats to their health. Take Carmen Soo, Jericho Rosales’ leading lady in the Emmy-nominated Kahit Isang Saglit. The Malaysian actress got the scare of her life recently when her doctor advised an operation to remove a 10-year-old lump in her breast.

“I’ve been putting things off because I was busy with the soap,” she recalls. There was no delaying things anymore when she returned to Malaysia. The lump was growing and her doctor was firm: The operation couldn’t wait.

Carmen never had any drastic medical procedure done on her, not even, she says, a tooth extraction (see those pearly whites?).

“I’ve never taken anesthesia. Neither did I have an appendix removed,” she relates.

So the mere thought of going under the knife for the first time alarmed Carmen.

“I was down for two months,” she recalls.

Good thing the lump is benign and Carmen can now heave a sigh of relief. But that brief brush with the unknown taught her an important lesson.

She has become more health-conscious. Knowing that stress is the main culprit behind many illnesses, including that lump that worried her so, Carmen slowed down for two months. She watched what she ate, got into an exercise regimen and made sure she got lots of sleep.

“I love the sun! I swim and go wakeboarding weekly,” she says.

Carmen knows that she must pay a steep price for loving the sun the way she does. The rays rob her skin of moisture and may make it dry as cracked earth on a hot summer day.

On top of that, now that she’s back to work (she will soon shoot a TV drama in Singapore), Carmen must wear make-up daily. Thus, her sensitive skin is exposed to lots of chemicals.

“That’s why I’ve been using Clinelle for a year now,” Carmen explains. Her favorite is the brand’s SnoWhite Mask, which she claims it makes her skin fair and glowing almost instantly. She also applies LMS Cream twice daily to keep the lines away.

Health-conscious Carmen doesn’t worry about harmful ingredients touching her face since the products are safe for the skin.

If Carmen is happy with Clinelle, the skin care brand feels the same way with its endorser.

She has a healthy glow, observes one of the executives. She’s young and popular. And just as important, Carmen has a good heart.

When she returned to Manila on the heels of Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng, Carmen went to her mother studio, ABS-CBN, to help in the network’s relief efforts. Carmen won’t mind helping some more, but she has to go Singapore for her new TV drama series.

But she promised to be back soon in Manila for a new TV project which she’d rather keep under wraps for now.

“Negotiations are underway,” Carmen says with an intriguing smile.

Will the new project team Carmen up with Jericho again?

Again, her lips are sealed. Not that she minds at all. Carmen still gets in touch with Jericho, who she says is so busy “he will only be free in year 2020.”

What’s for sure though, is that Carmen wants to improve her Tagalog “in the next five years.”

This only means one thing: We’ll see more of Carmen’s refreshing face in the next few years. That’s her challenge to herself and her promise to fans.

Sarah Geronimo - "Record Breaker" concert

Noynoy Aquino at Kris Aquino-Yap.

Sa Nov. 16, magsisimulang mag-taping si Kris ng bago niyang soap sa ABS-CBN entitled Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo, to be directed by Erick Salud and Trina Dayrit, the same team behind Tayong Dalawa.

Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson, movie in January 2010

The phenomenal success of Tayong Dalawa has solidified Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson’s tandem as the hottest love team in showbiz today. Kim and Gerald are already preparing for their movie to be shown in January 2010 with a guest appearance on Maalaala Mo Kaya very soon. But even with all the projects coming their way, they insist that they are not out to compete with the other prime artists of Star Magic. At sana by 2010 suportahan nila yung movie namin ni Gerald,” Kim said in an interview with ABS-CBN.com.

Gerald, on the other hand, was very happy that they have both been given opportunities to take their showbiz careers to the next level. “It’s overwhelming. I’m just very happy dahil mas malalim na yung tiwala nila sa amin ni Kim.”

Since their film is going to be a romantic-comedy, there are already speculations as to whether they can surpass the box office team-up of John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo in You Change My Life. When asked if they are ready to take on that challenge, the young actor explained that he and Kim would rather focus on putting their best foot forward than think of such rivalry issues. Ibibigay namin yung 100% namin. Wala namang rivalry with John Lloyd [or Sarah].

Gerald further shared that their roles would be more mature than the ones they portrayed in the movie I’ve Fallen For You two years ago. But it still remains to be seen whether there would be a big screen follow-up of their love scene in Tayong Dalawa.

Kim went on to assure their fans, “Sa ngayon hindi pa namin pwedeng idetalye kung ano yung roles namin ni Gerald.

Vina Morales, back to work

After two months na ipanganak niya ang first baby nila ng boyfriend niyang si Cedrec Lee, gusto na agad niyang mag-work out.

Kaya ngayon, back to work si Vina.

“Ang lovelife ko naman for four years on and off. Actually, it was Ceana who gave birth to me, not me giving birth to Ceana. And I’m so blessed,” sabi ni Vina.

Nagpa-plano ba uli siyang magkaanak?

“For now I’m enjoying Ceana.

Claudine Barretto umalma

Wala akong tinata-pakang tao.

Sharon Cuneta updates

SA panayam namin kay Sharon Cuneta sa first shooting day ng Mano Po 6: My Mother, muli ay idineklara ng Megastar na walang dapat ipangamba ang Sharonians na nag-alala sa napabalitang may breast cancer siya.

Truth is, totoong nagpa-check-up si Mega matapos makapa ang bukol sa kanyang breast at narito ang detalyado niyang kuwento tungkol dito.

“There was one night kasi, I took a bath, it was like two in the morning after work. During ’yan ng shooting ng BFF (Best Friends Forever, movie nila ni Ai-Ai de las Alas shown last May).

So, ginising ko si Kiko, sabi ko, ‘you have to feel this, do you feel this?”

“We were on the bed, nakaupo, tapos, iyak ako nang iyak na. Tapos, para lang makaiwas sa tsismis, we went to some Asian country and had all the tests done there, we went to a hospital.

“I took only Kiko, not even my mom or my brother knew. And I didn’t wanna tell KC, pag-uwi na namin when everything was okay.

“It was benign but ’yung Kiko’s and my wait for the result, that was probably the longest few hours of my life.

And then, umuwi ako.

“Noting to worry, not at all.

“Pero siyempre, to hear na I have lumps in my breast, ganyan, marami akong Sharonians na nag-worry talaga, saka relatives, siyempre, and friends.

“That’s why, ’wag kayong mag-aalala, I’m okay, wala akong sakit, they found lumps but they were walang saysay,” natatawa niyang sabi.

At least man lang ’yung friendship, ma-save.”

Ngayong Nobyembre, walong bansa sa Asya, tulad ng Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan at Thailand, ang bibisitahin niya para i-launch ang Erik Santos: The Jim Brickman Songbook.

“It has always been a dream for me. I have never imagined that my album will reach countries outside the Philippines,” sambit ni Erik.

“With the SD Card format, mas madali n’yo na akong makakasama through my songs, kasi puwede n’yo akong ibulsa,” biro ni Erik. “Maganda ito, kasi puwede n’yong pakinggan ang songs ko through your phones na hindi n’yo na kailangang i-download.”

Bahala na or baha - 'la na?

What went wrong with Metro Manila? Was there urban planning at all for this metropolis?

As traced by last Tuesday’s episode of The Correspondents (anchored by Karen Davila), there was. Unfortunately, there was lack of implementation.

With the help of resource persons armed with diagrams, I now finally understand the issue over the unimplemented Parañaque spillway that people kept talking about in the aftermath of Ondoy.

In the ‘70s, plans were underway to dig through Parañaque to create a spillway from Laguna Lake down Manila Bay. Had that plan been implemented, flooding shouldn’t have happened in the Laguna lakeshore communities. But look at the barangays surrounding the lake now — these are still submerged in water three weeks after Ondoy.

So why was the Parañaque spillway never dug up? As pointed out in The Correspondents, Parañaque became a fashionable residential community in the ‘70s and nobody could work their way through there anymore by the time government was ready to start the project.

And then there was also the issue of the grand plan for Metro Manila also around that time that was never implemented. This dates back to the infamous period when Imelda Marcos was governor of Metro Manila. After the Marcoses were removed from power, every mayor was given the task to run his own town or city without coordinating with their neighbors and that created a problem of governance for the head of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA). Karen clearly illustrated that when she hopped atop a raft in a submerged area where there used to be a street prior to Ondoy.

Why was that place still submerged almost three weeks after Ondoy? Who had jurisdiction over that? And so she proceeds to point out the fact that a few meters away was the boundary line of Taytay, to her other side was Taguig and if she could only cross, that was Pasig.

And then there was the matter of the short term for government officials — like a mayor is only given a three-year term and that explains why there is no long-range planning for our towns and cities. I agree with that, but given the reality of politics in the Philippines, a mayor may vacate his or her post after several terms, but eventually the spouse takes over or even one of the children and please spare me the burden of rattling off names.

Those who hang on to their power, of course, should just be rightfully branded as greedy — like they can’t have enough. Now, greed was another reason why urban planning went haywire in Metro Manila. As one resource person said: One of the biggest sources of income for those cities came from the development of some of those subdivisions that shouldn’t have been there in the first place because these were low-lying areas.

Even MMDA chairman Bayani Fernando bitterly admitted to Karen that Marikina shouldn’t have been inhabited and should probably have been just allowed to remain what it was supposed to be: Rice fields. But in due fairness to Fernando, those subdivisions were already there even before he became Marikina mayor. Despite being in the fault line, Marikina residents I know were happy with the way the city was developed by him. It is, in fact, the most disaster prepared among our cities, but 90 percent of it still got submerged.

In that same episode, The Correspondents showed a map (supposedly submitted to the United Nations) that indicated the areas where we were not supposed to inhabit. But build away we did — and look at the repercussions.

These government officials toy with both the rich and poor. They play with the money of the rich by approving the developments of these subdivisions (and profit even more from the huge real estate taxes that property owners have to pay annually) even if those places aren’t fit for human population. The poor, of course, have been used by generations of politicians who need the vote of the informal settlers come election time. Surely, we need not say anymore that our esteros have all been but clogged when these squatters decided to appropriate these waterways for their own use. That had always been obvious, but to this day is tolerated by the government. And so we got denuded. Let’s see if Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will succeed with her recent pronouncement to relocate informal settlers who obstruct our waterways.

Historically, most of us know that in his attempt to decongest Manila proper, the late Pres. Manuel L. Quezon had the plans laid out to move the center to what is now Quezon City, which is safer because it stands on higher ground. But as another resource person reminded Karen, the Second World War intervened and Quezon’s plan to move all government offices there was never fully realized.

But if you think about it now, we would still have problems with flooding because at the rate our population grew, we all wouldn’t fit still in Quezon City and surely we’d go the surrounding areas — like Marikina and now Bulacan — which was what most of us did. But would anyone dare get into an argument with the Catholic Church with regard to its stand on population control? Uh-oh. Did I just get ex-communicated?

And so what do we do now to prevent another Ondoy? (Pepeng is another matter.) As resource person Paolo Alcazaren (of this paper) put it in The Correspondents, by December and with another Pacquiao win, we’d forget all about the tragedy that was Ondoy. Yes, I agree with him. We’ll just go our usual merry way. No thanks to our “bahala na” attitude.

Or should it be “baha-la” na?

Mar Roxas.

Christian Bautista makes a career-defining move

If I were Christian Bautista, I’d think I’d died and gone to heaven while working on this new CD. Okay, let me tone that down a bit. I’d be feeling like a kid let lose in a toy store with a horde of treasures to do with as I please. And what treasures they are! Those are the songs in the Jose Mari Chan catalogue, which as rediscovered here in Christian’s new album, Romance Revisited, The Love Songs Of Jose Mari Chan, are truly some of the most beautiful ballads ever written.

Tribute albums are nothing new. But this CD is one of the very few to feature only a single artist and lucky guy Christian turned out to be the anointed one. I do not know who else dreamed of doing this project or if Jose Mari or label Universal Records had other choices. But whatever misgivings there may have been about giving this opportunity to Christian are now totally forgotten. The fact is, I cannot think of anybody who could have done it better.

Jose Mari must be pleased and Christian must be ecstatic. The balladeer torch had been passed, from a singing idol of over four decades to a worthy successor. Remember, Jose Mari had been making hit songs since the ‘60s. For a recording artist like Christian, this career-defining move beats everything else. Maybe even finding a new girlfriend.

The best thing about this album though, is how it has proven how truly enduring are the songs of Jose Mari. Nobody is going to say anymore that Refrain or Beautiful Girl has become dated or is now too old-fashioned for young listeners. As heard in Romance Revisited with their new arrangements, these and the others are fresh, very current and will soon be again in the charts.

The first bet for the hit lists is Tell Me Your Name. Good choice. I have a strong hunch though that I Remember The Girl and Afraid For Love To Fade would be even bigger. Maybe, so would any of the duets, Please Be Careful With My Heart with Sarah Geronimo; My Girl, My Woman, My Friend with Regine Velasquez; Here And Now with Lani Misalucha; and A Heart’s Journey with Jose Mari Chan himself.

Also included are I Have Fallen In Love (With The Same Woman Three Times) which is the Ninoy Aquino poem
for his wife Cory; Beautiful Girl; Can’t We Start Over Again; Be Gentle; Stay My Love; Afterglow, Jose Mari’s first hit; A Love To Last A Lifetime; Constant Change; Deep In My Heart; Refrain; Can We Just Stop And Talk A While; and So I’ll Go.

Now still on Christian but about another album. Call it coincidence or a clever marketing ploy, but now also available alongside in Romance Revisited in the stores is Christian’s The Platinum
Collection. This comes from Warner Music, the label which signed the unknown Christian some six years ago and which propelled his career to stardom. The CD is a compilation of his early hits including some unreleased versions, of One Who Won My Heart and Limutin Na Lang, both done acoustic style.

The other cuts included are The Way You Look At Me; Trying To Get The Feeling; Got To Believe In Magic; Captured featuring Sitti; My Heart Has A Mind Of Its Own; Hands To Heaven; Invincible; You’re Still You; Kelan Kaya?; Colour Everywhere; More Than You’ll Ever Know; Miracle feat. Nina; You And Me (We Wanted It All) with his former girlfriend, singing champion Rachelle Ann Go; So It’s You; Say That You Love Me; and Completely.

It must feel like Christmas morning for fans of Christian. Imagine getting both these albums at the same time. Add to this the fact that Romance Revisited comes with a 2010 calendar in a gorgeous gift box. But now that I’ve mentioned Christmas, I’d like to say that it would have been nice to have a Christmas song in the Jose Mari Chan album. I am sure that Christian singing A Perfect Christmas or Christmas In Our Hearts would have made the album perfect. But I guess we are already getting more than enough. So let us just all enjoy Christian’s two albums.

Vilma Santos back misty-eyed in the Big Apple

Only a few months after a hectic two-week shooting in the tri-state of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut for In My Life, Star Cinema’s newest hit, Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos returned to the East Coast last Sept. 30, this time to grace the premiere of the movie in which she co-stars with her son Luis Manzano (also playing her son in the movie) and John Lloyd Cruz (as Luis’ lover).

“Filipinos from all over the east coast flocked to Rutherford, New Jersey, to watch the movie,” reported Funfare’s “beauty expert” Felix Manuel who works as a nurse at a hospital in the Big Apple. “The screening was held at the historic George W. Newman Theater famous for a chandelier twinkling with 60,000 pieces of Czechoslovakian crystal, which is the venue for the staging of opera performances such as Puccini’s Madame Butterfly and Verdi’s Rigoletto by the Hudson Opera Company.”

Felix said that people came from as far as South Carolina to meet Vilma and her co-stars. Two screenings were held on that day.

“The matinee screening at 2 p.m. was packed,” added Felix. “It was amazing because most of our kababayan were supposed to be at work. Many of them said that they took time off while others didn’t mind being absent because they didn’t want to miss the movie.”

There was a meet-and-greet with the cast after the matinee show. A hundred people were randomly chosen to have an opportunity to have their pictures taken with the stars.

“It was a rare chance to be with them,” Felix quoted Daisy Sonalan, a nurse working in New Jersey, as saying. “We made sure that we scheduled our day-off that day because the event made us feel even closer to home. I was lucky to have been chosen from thousands to attend the meet-and-greet.”

It was indeed a day filled with fun and laughter for the Filipino Community in the East Coast. Gov. Vi (who came back last Thursday, Oct. 8), director Olivia Lamasan and the whole cast were beaming with pride upon seeing the huge turnout at the theater.

“Viewers of the evening screening at 7 p.m. were already at the venue as early as 2 in the afternoon. They patiently stood in line. Engineer Danilo Pagsambugan, founder of the Maharlikang Pilipino-USA Pageant, commented that he appreciated the effort of Star Cinema and ABS-CBN in bringing the event to the East Coast. Screenings were also held in, among other US cities, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Said Danny, “It kept us Filipinos in the States posted on what’s happening at home. The movie connected us to home. We had a great unwinding with our favorite stars.”

The good news is that, according to Felix, the event also became a venue for our kababayan to help the victims of Typhoon Ondoy. “Many of them donated money. The cast encouraged everyone to help rebuild the lives of our kababayan back home who were affected by nature’s wrath.”

After the movie, everyone gave two-thumbs-up for the stars’ brilliant acting.

“John Lloyd drew raves for his portrayal of Luis’ gay partner. Ate Vi has always been exceptional. We expect her to win acting awards next year.”

Not a deluge could make Sen./Vice Presidentiable Mar Roxas and his fiancée Korina Sanchez change their plan to get married not on Oct. 23 as originally reported but on Oct. 27. When Mar announced his decision to drop his plan to run for president in 2010 two months ago, people thought that he and Korina would postpone their wedding indefinitely or scrap it altogether, never mind if the well-publicized pamanhikan was already done with.

The wedding is not co-terminus with Mar’s presidential ambition. But, according to Funfare’s Cubao-friendly DPA, “Because of the destruction wrought by Typhoon Ondoy, leaving thousands homeless and hundreds dead, they might ‘tone down’ the event.” The wedding will be held at the Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City but, added the DPA, “The reception might have to be ‘streamlined’.” The good thing is that, tuloy ang ligaya; tuloy na tuloy ang kasal!

Tutuloy sila sa Jubilee Center, San Jose (Oct. 20), Long Beach Convention Center, California (Oct. 24) at Gladtidings, Vancouver, Canada.

Rosanna naglabas ng maraming rebelasyon kay Sen. Bong

Asahang ‘‘sanitized’’ ang episode na ito ngayong umaga (with replay before midnight) unless it is the program’s subtle way of taking a bow.

Admittedly, I am not close to any member of the Revilla family maliban kay Andrea ‘‘Andeng’’ Bautista-Ynares, but I felt strongly for them.

Teka, any person with a sane mind would not even conform to the idea that there should be a so-called ‘‘hiramin’’ agreement.

Susme, this is an issue long before buried in the rubbles of oblivion!

Teka, what has Bong’s private life outside politics got to do with the issue?

Teka, Osang must have friends with the Commission on Audit to be able to know the exact figures!

Sounds like her old, run-off-the-mill film, ang Patikim ng Pinya.

May karugtong pa po ito. Patikim din lang ito ng ‘‘P’’ ni Osang, kayo na ang bahalang magbigay ng kahulugan what the letter stands for.

Relief goods diverted to Kim Chiu’s house

that will change your life and other stuff). Read ninyo :

Relief goods diverted to Kim Chiu’s house

Volunteers helping out Typhoon Ondoy victims reportedly brought a pack of relief goods to the house of young actress Kim Chiu upon getting reports that she was starving to death.

“It was just a miscommunication,” said Reggie Pastor, a volunteer distributing relief goods to Ondoy victims at the Tatalon Elementary School, which served as an evacuation center in Quezon City.

“We got a report that someone named Kim Chiu was suffering from severe malnutrition after Typhoon Ondoy, so we dispatched a team to her house to bring the relief goods,” Pastor said. “But it turned out that the information was false.”

To the actress’s credit, she refused the relief goods – three cans of sardines, three packs of instant pancit canton, a bottle of mineral water and a two-kilo bag of rice – saying Ondoy victims were in much more dire need of relief than her.

Pastor asked the public to please refrain from spreading false reports through text. Chiu’s on-screen partner Gerald Anderson reportedly rushed to Chiu’s house out of concern, but was relieved to find out that she was okay. Chiu and Anderson were among the stars who participated in ABS-CBN’s relief drive.
