Rosario and Halaw Compete at Shanghai Int'l Fest
Two first features by Filipino directors are among the films competing for the Asia New Talent Award (ANTA) at the Shanghai International Film Festival to be held from June 11 to 19.
Albert Martinez’s Rosario and Sheron Dayoc’s Halaw will vie for the Best Film and Best Director awards in the ANTA section which comes with a cash award of RMP 300,000.
Rosario produced by Cinemabuhay and Studio 5 was an entry in last year’s Metro Manila Film Festival and won Second Best Picture and the Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Memorial Award and won several awards from the Gawad PASADO including Best Film and Director for Martinez.
Halaw (Ways of the Sea) won Best Film in the 2010 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. Dayoc competed for the New Currents Award in Pusan last year and Halaw won Special Mention from the NETPAC when it was shown in the Forum section of Berlin last February.
ANTA was established in 2004. Continually seeking and promoting emerging film talent, the organizing committee attaches great importance to this award.
For this year’s edition, Shunji Iwai will chair the panel for the Asian New Talent Award and the members are senior film expert Derek Elley, actress Guey Lun-mei, director Alex Law, and actor Xia Yu.
On other festival news, Francis Xavier Pasion’s Sampaguita (National Flower) will be presented at the Isola Cinema Film Festival in Isola, Slovenia from June 8 to 13. After its screenings in Isola, Sampaguita will also be screened in the capital city of Ljubljana.
Sampaguita won the jury prize in last year’s Cinemalaya and competed for the New Currents Award in Pusan and the Crystal Bear Award in Berlin.
Director Pasion and producer Ferdinand Lapuz are attending the festival. They are leaving for Isola on June 8 and will return on June 13.
Sampaguita was Pasion’s second feature after Jay. He is the resident director of ABS CBN’s Wansapanataym.
