Gerald Anderson as Budoy

Gerald Anderson said that he is faced with a “very emotionally draining” role in an upcoming TV soap on ABS-CBN — but he’s not complaining.

It was initially reported that his first teleserye for this year was the action-packed Bagwis. It has, however, been put on hold to give way to Budoy, an “advocacy-oriented” drama vehicle that sees the 22-year-old actor playing the title role of a mentally retarded person.

“It’s very emotionally draining. Budoy is 22 years old, but he thinks like a 10-year-old. It’s already draining acting out a normal person with crying scenes everyday. How much more if you’re acting someone who’s mentally retarded? But I know I’m doing something right with this role,” he told The STAR in a separate interview after a presscon hosted by the skincare brand Dermablend last Wednesday. The soap line renewed Gerald’s contract as one of its two male endorsers; the other being fellow Kapamilya star Sam Milby.

There’s no word yet on Budoy’s exact airing schedule, but Gerald said it’s going to run before the year ends. As preparation, he devoured Hollywood films that tackled the same theme such as Forrest Gump and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, and immersed in schools for special children, including one in Montalban, Rizal. He said, “At the schools, I would just sit in a corner and observe the students from how they eat to how they interact with their parents.”

He described his encounters with the special children as “heartwarming.” He fondly recalled, “It was very heartwarming. Di na sila umalis sa tabi ko, nakayakap, ganun sila ka sobrang malambing. Some of the kids recognized me. One said, ‘Gerald Anderson you’re my best actor.’ I was happily surprised that they knew me.” The experiences got him so inspired that he’s set on organizing celebrity basketball matches, the earnings of which will support the schools they visited.

Gerald also shared that there were times when he found it hard to shake off his role. In a recent trip to Hong Kong, he laughingly admitted slipping into character, much to the surprise of his friends. “I couldn’t help but get carried away sometimes because I’ve spent hours and hours studying the role. Once I stepped out of the car, once I’m on the set, I’m Budoy.”

Physically, the young actor had to undergo some changes. Apart from shedding off 15 pounds, his good looks are being downplayed. Interestingly, he played a similarly offbeat role who suffered from a medical condition called Tourette Syndrome for Maalaala Mo Kaya. His performance was recognized in several award-giving bodies.

Asked if this type of role is an attempt to “deglamorize” him as an actor, he said, “Hindi ko alam why I’m given these roles, but I’m thankful. If they deglamorize me, I hope so because that’s what I want.”

“Sanay ako sa nagpapa-cute, may ka-loveteam at nagsusubuan ng ice cream,” he added jokingly, “and there’s nothing wrong with it, since dun ako nagsimula.

“But it’s time to move on. And I want to change my look in every soap. Sometimes, when I take a look at scenes we shot for Budoy in the video playback, I think to myself: ‘Is that really me?’ I really get to look different here.”

Moving on also meant venturing into Kim Chiu-less acting territory. It was early this year when Gerald reportedly parted ways with Kim, also his perennial love team partner, although the two never made it crystal-clear — just coy references on the pains of separation in interviews — if they were truly a romantic item or close to it.

But their love team is known to have one of the most rabid followings around, who have been vocal about their unhappiness over the fate that has befallen Kimerald (the uni-name that fans christened the tandem). Now, it seems there’s no stopping the two from steadily moving into opposite directions. Kim is also starring in her own teleserye Binondo Girl.

But Gerald said there will always be Kimerald and that possibility of a future project together, but at this point, he is asking fans to accept their situation. “She’s very happy, I’m very happy and we’re both busy. (But) we’re friends. If she has problems, I’m here for her.”

Gerald, nevertheless, admitted that it’s tough going solo because their love team lasted for four years, with a slew of projects that required them to be practically together every day. But the changes are for the best.

He stressed, “The love team, Kimerald, is a love team and we’ll always be a love team. Magkakaroon din kami ng mga projects.”

“But for now, I’m happy and excited at how things are going for the both of us. In my case, it’s also more challenging to give support to new and different leading ladies,” shared Gerald who’s going to partner anew with Sarah Geronimo in a film later this year after their first big screen teamup last March. He will also have Jessie Mendiola (star of Sabel) as love interest in Budoy.

“There’s nothing wrong with having a love team partner. But if you’re working with the same person all the time, what’s going to be the challenge there? What else can you show? For now, I’m going to focus on being a solo actor. I want to be versatile.”

He also wants to inspire with his new project. “The preparation has been really difficult because as an actor, I want to give justice to the role. I’m not aiming (for an acting award) but if mapansin ako, okay na talaga sa akin. But I aim for inspiration. I’m really thankful to be in this position. The more sumisikat ka, the more people look up to you and the more you want to set a good example. And that’s really my target for Budoy. I want to inspire people through this TV series. That’s my main priority.”

OJ Mariano aims to do more

While other artists dare not tread other paths for their musicality to attain greater heights, OJ Mariano never ceases to break new grounds, displaying his vocal talent the best way he knows how.

After his stint on the now defunct Singing Bee on ABS-CBN, gigs here and abroad keep him from being idle. He has also released two albums in a span of short time: One Dream Come True and Ballads. Both albums proved him the right to be called Soulful Balladeer. OJ’s latest album OJ Mariano Ballads Premium Edition, released under Star Records, is still out in the market. His previous releases became part of Kapamilya soaps like Hanggang Dito Na Lang which was included in the Lobo original soundtrack while Sana’y Malaman Mo became the theme song of the Mexican TV soap El Cuerpo. He had also done concerts in the past.

But OJ seemingly wants to do more. This time, his feet have led him to the theater stage. He starred in such theatrical plays as Dulaang UP’s Isang Panaginip Na Fili and Rent, which had three successful runs. Currently, he is in the cast of Sweet Charity, staging at the Carlos P. Romulo auditorium in RCBC Plaza until Aug. 27.

According to OJ, he tried theater a year ago and, eventually, liked the idea of singing and acting on stage.

“I’m enjoying theater very much because of the kind of discipline you can get and the kind of training it has,” begins OJ. “It’s overwhelming as theater covers almost all aspects — singing, acting, dancing. Even the way you present yourself to people will improve and most especially you will know how to play your character well.”

He, too, has learned to value time. He comes to rehearsals on time or earlier so there will be no time wasted. “They (theater people) are very strict on time. If you arrive late, it is automatically deducted from your rehearsal fee. What’s good about it is you get to perfect your role when you have more time to practise.”

Asked where he prefers to be seen more — on TV or on stage, OJ replies, “Right now, I prefer doing theater due to the kind of satisfaction I get every after performance. You get immediate response from the audience. The advantage of appearing on TV is you get to be recognized by more people whether they are in the province or abroad.”

But OJ quickly adds he is eager to do a concert once again. His last show, In Love with the Balladeers, was in February of last year. Thus, tomorrow, Aug. 18, 8 p.m. at the Music Museum, OJ is set to mesmerize the audience with songs that are meaningful to him. Titled Playlist, the show will see him performing solo and on a duet with guests Sitti and Carla Guevarra. Novo Concertantes and Pole Cats will also take part in the show.

“Playlist is a combination of songs that I like but I haven’t performed yet. This is a mixture of songs I listen to now — Broadway, OPM, classic songs and new ones.”

OJ will also render a song dedicated to his friend who passed away recently. “I’ll be singing Circle of Life from The Lion King with Novo Concertantes because that was what my friend, who was also a member of the choir, often performed solo during our shows abroad. It’s like a tribute to him.”

Being a product of a talent search himself, having placed second runner-up in Star in a Million, what can OJ say about the new crop of singers flooding the music scene now?

“They are real talents and I think a talent contest is one good avenue for singers because in my case for example, nobody knew about me and Star in a Million became a good starting point.”

The only advice he could give is “for them (new singers) not to allow success go to their heads because if they do, it will be the start of their fall.

“Success is great. But for me, as long as people recognize my talent, okay na yun.”

Good Vibes TV Show Beats Tween Hearts

ABS-CBN’s “Good Vibes” displayed its ratings power last Sunday (July 31) as it widened its lead over rival program “Tween Hearts.”

Based on the national TV ratings from global media specialist Kantar Media, the Sam Concepcion and Enrique Gil-led show garnered a rating of 12.2% compared to just 8.8% of “Tween Hearts.” This is the highest rating for “Good Vibes” since it was launched last April.

With the story of the Pedroza brothers—Marc (Sam) and Troy (Enrique)—and the whole Good Vibes crew nearing its end, fans are clamoring for another extension for the program, which has been airing for more than four months.

Aside from the amazing dance numbers, viewers tune in to the show because of its stories that ooze both romance and life lessons. Just like in the coming episode, the program will highlight again the importance of believing in oneself and in your team as the Good Vibes crew finally auditions for the Pilipinas Dance Challenge.

Maribeth, played by Devon Seron, will also show how it is to be true to one’s feelings after she unintentionally reveals her love to one of her suitors. Find out if this lucky fellow is Spencer (James Reid) or Gab (Ivan Dorschner) this Sunday.

Meanwhile, the cast of the program personally brought good vibes to the children of “Childhaus,” after they joined them in transferring to their new home. “Childhaus” is a facility that serves as shelter of children with severe illnesses.

Sam, said he is amazed by how the small act of helping them move houses went a long way for the children.

“It really warmed my heart to see them with hope and smiles on their faces as they moved to a better home. I’m really glad to have been a part of their lives somehow,” he shared.

More romantic scenes and awesome dance numbers are coming so don’t miss the country’s number one youth-oriented show “Good Vibes,” after “ASAP Rocks,” on ABS-CBN. Also watch for the GV crew as they open “Gandang Gabi Vice” also this Sunday (Ausgut 7) after “Pilipinas Got Talent.”
